MOHUN BAGAN BEAT MUMBAI FC BY 3-0
Kolkata ,
23-Jan, 2009 : Mohun Bagan made a tremendous start to their return league campaign of I-league 2008-09 when they ousted Mumbai FC 3-0. Barreto, Baichung and Lalampuia scored for Mariners. Mohun Bagan made a record today by winning their 7th match in a row, previous record was 6 consecutive wins by Mahindra and East Bengal. Baichung got Man of the Match award for his brilliant goal, the award could have been given to Marcos also as he marshalled the midfield to perfection.
Bagan were the better team to start with as the Yellow brigade, who won 2-1 in the first leg, looked nervous in the initial stages. But Barreto, Baichung, Ishfaq, Marcos, Manju, Odafe, Lalkamal shots either went just wide or were defended well by Mumbai FC defenders. Mumbai FC fielded goalkeeper Amit Sinha Roy played well to make sure Bagan doen't get an early lead in the match. The first half ended with both the teams failing to open an account. Bagan was surely missing positive movements from the right flank.
In the second half Ishfaq started moving up from the left flank and Barreto from the right. At times, Manju, Deepak , Marcos, Odafe continue to create pressure for the Mumbai outfit. In the 73rd minute, Barreto got a ball from a Habibur throw in and moved up on the right flank. His cross found Baichung whose half volley was enough to earn him the Man of the Match award.
In the 81st minute Marcos pased a ball to Barreto who again made a solo for around 30 yards on the right flank. Barreto got into the box and placed the ball in the first post.
Later Baichung was replaced by Lalawmpuia and Mama replaced James. Marcos passed a ball to Puia in the 90th minute, and Puia showed his brilliance in converting that to a goal. Barreto was replaced by Lalramluaha soon after the third goal.
Mumbai FC definitely missed the ace goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey who played really well in the matc between Bagan and Mumbai FC in the first leg.
After the match Kareem said, "I am very pleased with the result. I have equaled my personal record of seven straight wins which was back in 2001 in Malta. I have never repeated that record and now I am looking for an eighth win." Bencherifa had high words of praise for his striking trio of Bhaichung, Jose Barreto and Lalwampuia. "All the three strikers scored including Lalwampuia, who wasn't in the best fitness level after the break. He has lost around 5 kg in the last three weeks." The coach also mentioned that it is difficult for visiting teams to create many chances at Cooperage Stadium. "No team coming to Cooperage can create many chances. You must know how to capitalize on your chances which we did."
