MOHUN BAGAN BEATEN 2-1 BY AL WEHDAT OF JORDAN

Kolkata , 17-Mar, 2009 :

Mohun Bagan dominated the match against Al Wehdat of Jordan today but went down 1-2 after missing quite a few easy chances in their Group D match of Asia Cup today played in Howrah Stadium. Mohun Bagan started the match with 4-4-1-1 formation with Baichung as lone forward and Lalkamal being the bridge between midfield and forward. In 5th minute, James Singh got the ball in right flank and gave a pass to Baichung whose shot just missed target. In 8th minute, Lalkamal got a ball in midfield, ran a few paces and then took a right footed shot which the Al Wehdat goalkeeper made a brilliant save. Sangram was tested for the first time in 10th minute, when he saved Ahmed Abdelhalim's shot by diving to his left. Mohun Bagan went ahead in 13th minute. Dipak Mandal gave a long pass to James Singh in the right flank who again ran with the ball and delivered a cross for Baichung from whose well measured pass Rakesh Masih took a rasping shot that beat goalkeeper hands down making the scoreline 1-0 in favor of Mariners. However, Al Wehdat equalized within 5 minutes. Mohanraj is to be partly blamed for the goal. Issa Husamaldean crossed the ball from left by getting past Mohanraj and it went straight to M. Shelbaieh who easily headed the ball in past Sangram, Rahul Kumar was completely out of position when the scorer headed the ball. In 25th minute, from Rahul's center, Baichung chest trapped the ball and took a right footed shot which against narrowly missed the target. In 34th minute, this time a center from Ishfaq found Baichung but his back head was misdirected. Al Wehdat scored their second goal in 42nd minute when H. Abdel-Fattah pushed the ball past Sangram inside net via left footed shot after chest trapping the ball nicely and turning almost 180 degrees inside the box, Mohun Bagan defenders were caught napping. Just before lemon break, Mariners made two good moves. The first one saw Lalkamal gave a pass to Ishfaq who made a down the middle run but he could not pass the ball properly back to Lalkamal who was in an advantageous position inside the box. In next minute, James crossed the ball from right which went straight to Baichung who got the ball in a comfortable height and he could have taken a side volley himself but instead he preferred the other option of giving pass to Ishfaq, but the latter could not get to the ball. In first half, Mohun Bagan dominated proceedings for initial 15 minutes but after that the match was evenly poised with both teams attacking.

After lemon break, Marcos came in place of Lalramluah who did not have a good match today after his brilliant performance in the away match in Syria. In 58th minute, James again delivered a good cross from right flank which went straight to Baichung who brilliantly chest trapped the ball but Al Wehdat defender made a timely clearance. In 61st minute, Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencharifa made a double change by bringing on Branco and Tulunga in place of Lalkamal and James. Tulunga was in the thick of action soon when in 64th minute, he got past the right back and took the ball inside box and floated the ball towards Baichung but unfortunately the cross was a little wayward and went over crossbar. In the next minute, Branco back headed the ball for Tulunga but his center was cleared for safety by Al Wehdat defence. The experienced team from Jordan then started wasting time when their goalkeeper was seen falling to the ground on slightest touch and in this half he wasted almost 6-7 minutes. In 72nd minute from Marcos free kick, Odafe's head beat goalkeeper but went just over crossbar. In 79th minute, Branco missed a very easy chance, when from a terrific center by Ishfaq, Branco headed the ball straight to goalkeeper from close range. In next minute itself, Ishfaq again gave a nice pass to Marcos inside box but it was completely wasted as his shot went soaring over the crossbar. In 88th minute, this time from a Rahul center, Marcos headed the ball which went out after ricochetting off the post.

Overall Mohun Bagan had a good match but failed to get any point mainly due to missed chances. In first half, Mariners were a little cautious but after lemon break they went for the kill by bringing on Tulunga, Marcos and Branco but went down 1-2 to the team from Jordan. Sangram cannot be blamed for both the goals that Mariners conceded, he had a good match. Dipak, back from left back to stopper, had an outstanding match. Odafe also gave him good support. Mohanraj was a little shaky and made few errors while defending, he is to be partly blamed for the first goal. Rahul had more or less good match as right half but in case of first goal which team conceded, he was completely out of position. In midfield, Rakesh was quite good and seems that he is back to form. Not only did he score the only goal for Mohun Bagan, but he snatched balls nicely and made some good tackling in midfield. Ishfaq played well in left flank with his speed, often he was seen falling back and snatching the ball to perfection, the only thing which he needs to improve upon is his finishing. James Singh delivered some outstanding crosses but he was not so fast, his replacement Tulunga had a great match today and he maneuvered nicely and swiftly along the right wing. Lalramluah had quite a poor match today and was rightly replaced by Marcos who had recovered from an ankle injury. Marcos tried a lot but he was not at his best today, he missed one easy chance although his one attempt unluckily hit the bar. Lalkamal started the match nicely but as time passed, his passing deteriorated and Branco came in his place in 2nd half. Having recovered from injury, Branco was nowhere near his best. Baichung was brilliant today but unfortunately could not score any goals today but gave quite a few good passes, from one of which Rakesh scored the goal.

In press conference after the match, Al Wehdat coach said, "The field was not at all good and weather was poor, this ground has very uneven bounce. However, the match was a good one. Actually, we did not have 6-7 players in our team whom we did not bring due to our Arabian Championship match." When asked about Mohun Bagan, he said, "Mohun Bagan played well and yes they missed few easy chances but their attack was mainly via right flank and not much from left flank or from middle. Mohun Bagan's Baichung and Rahul Kumar was very good." When asked to compare between Mohun Bagan and Al Kuwait, he commented, "Al Kuwait is definitely the better team. Kuwait is a nation whose football is much developed, even they have qualified in World Cup in the past." The team will leave for Dubai tomorrow and from there they will go to Morocco to play their Arabian Championship match against Wihdat of Casablanca.

Karim began the press conference by saying that he is not satisfied with the result but the way Mohun Bagan fought, he is quite pleased with that. He said, "We played quite well in 2nd half. Both goals that we conceded could have been avoided. Just after match in team meeting, I said to my boys two things, firstly, I am satisfied with the performance and secondly, to forget about today's match and think about I league from tomorrow. I also appealed to them to switch on and get the job done by winning the remaining matches." "I still believe that I league is still very much open. We still have chance to win the title, still 3 matches are to be played by Churchill and Sporting de Goa," he said. About bringing on Marcos in second half, his comment was, "The changes were more forced than choice. I did not want to play Marcos today." When asked to compare between Al Karamah and Al Wehdat, his vote went for Al Wehdat. He said, "This team is better than Al Karamah. They were packed in midfield but we broke free down the flank and delivered quite a few good crosses but unluckily could not score."

Mohun Bagan will have their practice session tomorrow at 9 am, thursday being rest. Barreto is expected to join practice from Friday and there is high chance that he will play against Chirag on Monday. Odafe will miss that match due to double booking. The match against Chirag will be played in Barasat, kickoff time 6.30 pm. In other match of the group Al Kuwait beat Al Karamah 2-1.
