REFEREEING AND MISSED CHANCES DENY MARINERS POINT

Kolkata , 05-Oct, 2009 : 10-man Mohun Bagan was defeated 3-2 by Chirag United today. Despite being 1 man short, Mariners created many chances but not all of them was converted today. Another factor that went against Mohun Bagan was that Barreto had to be replaced within 25 minutes due to injury.

Referee also gave few vital decisions against Mohun Bagan. Du should have been shown red card within 5 minutes when he badly fouled Chiddi, referee showed him just yellow card. Around 75 minute mark, Du used his hand and pushed him down to ground but referee did not show any card to Du. One goal of Marcos was denied towards the end of the match. It was absolutely a clear goal that referee disallowed due to reasons best known to him and the linesman.

Mohun Bagan made few changes in their lineup from last match. Mohanraj, Snehasish and Kuluthungan was replaced by Mandi, Ishfaq and Marcos. Within 5 minutes, Du hit at Chiddi in midfield when they both jumped to head the ball, referee showed his leniency by flashing yellow card only at Du.

Ishfaq missed a very easy chance soon after when Barreto cleverly lobbed the ball inside Chirag box which Ishfaq tried to receive with his leg but could not control the ball properly and Sandeep cleared the ball. Ishfaq could have opted for heading the ball over onrushing goalkeeper. He last year had scored from an identical move against JCT in I league here in Salt Lake Stadium.

Barreto again provided a brilliant through pass for Chiddi, who latched on to the ball, dribbled past Sandeep and he had open goal in front of him, but his shot hit Manas Das standing in goal line and went out for corner. From corner, Ishfaq passed the ball to Marcos whose curling cross from left flank foxed the goalkeeper and went inside goal making the scoreline 1-0 in favor of Mohun Bagan.

Barreto was slightly injured and had to be replaced by Branco in 25th minute. Mandi was the weakest link in defence today and Chirag made quite a few attacks down their right flank. Mohanraj who was a little shaky in last few matches in Durand Cup and IFA Shield rightly did not see his name in first XI today but his replacement Mandi also did not perform well today.

Edmilson got one easy chance where he could not take the shot properly and Masih cleared the ball for safety. In 32nd minute, Chirag got penalty. Tulunga went past Mandi and passed the ball to Edmilson who tried to dodge past Sangram and easily fell to ground losing control of the ball, and referee awarded Chirag a penalty. Edmilson scored from spot kick to make scoreline 1-1.

Within minutes, Mohun Bagan was reduced to 10 men when Surkumar received marching orders. Gouranga had badly fouled Surkumar and Surkumar kicked at him and it hit both ball and Gouranga's leg, but unfortuantely Gouranga escaped with only yellow card but referee did not show leniency for Surkumar as he had shown for Du and Gouranga, similar to the IFA Shield semi final offence where Du was shown yellow card for same offence as Chiddi.

After the change of ends, Mohun Bagan made a positive start and started controlling the game. In 12th minute, Chiddi made a good move down right flank, cut in, got past two players and took a stinging shot that grazed the post.

From counter attack, Edmilson found himself 1:1 with Sangram, but Sangram made good anticipation and cleared the ball; but minutes later, from Tulunga's center, Joshimar headed the ball in past onrushing Sangram to score Chirag's 2nd goal. Within 5 minutes, Chirag scored their 3rd goal, when a through pass from Denson in midfield found Joshimar who was not offside, he pushed the ball past Sangram to make the scoreline 3-1.

Mohun Bagan increased their pressure and Mandi and Branco was replaced by Mohanraj and Kuluthungan. Branco and Micky did not have a good match today. Micky is not at all in good touch, this is his 9th match this season, but we hope both of them will start performing soon, as both are good players and have proved that time again in the past. Micky, however, took one brilliant free kick in 2nd half that hit cross bar and went out. Mohanraj played well today as a substitute and we sincerely hope he keep his good performance going from next match, he is definitely a very talented player.

After Kulu came in, coach Karim pushed Marcos up as striker with Chiddi and this worked as Chiddi almost scored when Sandeep fumbled with the ball and Chiddi had open goal in front of him but Du made a goal line save to avert danger. From resulting corner taken by Marcos, Rakesh headed the ball in to reduce the margin.

10-men Mohun Bagan kept piling pressure and from a long throw of Mohanraj, ball went to Kuluthungan who had a clear view of the goal, but Chiddi tried a back volley and as a result, the ball went out.

Mariners again missed another chance when Marcos free kick deflected off wall and went to Kulu who was standing unmarked inside box, but he failed to trap the ball and missed an easy chance to score.

Marcos then scored a goal which was canceled by referee. A defender of Chirag had back-headed the ball which Marcos went from behind, pounced upon the ball and pushed the ball inside goal past goalkeeper, but it was unforunately ruled offside, a very poor decision indeed taken by referee and linesman.

Today's referee was Pratap Singh. Two days back, he officiated the match in Pune between Pune FC and East Bengal where the match was held in rainy condition. Is there any dearth of referee in India that he needed to come from Pune to Kolkata within 48 hours time for today's match? He gave few vital decisions today against Mohun Bagan.

Mohun Bagan played inspiring football in 2nd half. Dipak, Masih, James, Marcos played well today. Chiddi though missed few chances, played well and kept the thrust continuously on Chirag defence and created panic time and again in their defence.

Mohun Bagan play their next match against JCT on 8th October.
