Mohun Bagan lost to JCT 2-1 today in an I league match held in Salt Lake Stadium.
Like last match, today also Mohun Bagan suffered due to extremely poor refereeing as they were denied a certain penalty and Dipak Mandal got marching orders due to not-so-grave offense.
Karim Bencharifa made few changes in his team bringing on Shilton, Mohanraj, Branco and Zenith in place of Sangram, Mandi, injured Barreto and suspended Surkumar. Mohun Bagan looked to pile pressure on the visitors from start and in 2nd minute, Ishfaq cut in from left side and took a shot that went straight to goalkeeper. In the next minute, from James' cross, Chiddi's effort from inside box was deflected off for corner. Continuing to build up pressure, from corner, Chiddi leaped well to head the ball but unfortunately it was cleared from goalline.
Zenith who made his debut for Mohun Bagan today had a very good match. Like James Singh, he is a very utility player and both of them can play in many positions like side back, side half, central medio. James continued with his good form today and delivered some very good cross from right flank throughout the match.
Zenith was in the thick of action in 9th minute when he brilliantly intercepted the ball and denied JCT player to take a shot.
In 15th minute, James delivered a cross from right side which was fisted by goalkeeper but nobody was following up to latch on to the ball and take a shot. Bar post came in the way of Mohun Bagan when in 20th minute, Masih gave the ball to Ishfaq in left flank who made a darting run down the left flank and passed the ball to Chiddi but his shot from outside the box beat goalkeeper and hit the post. Within 2 minute, Marcos again delivered a perfect corner which Chiddi leaped up to head the ball but his head went out of target.
JCT then took few long ranger shots but all went over cross bar. Other than those shots, Shilton was hardly tested in first half. Overall Mohun Bagan played better and got more chances to score before lemon break with woodwork coming in the way once.
But things turned around in first 10 minutes of 2nd half where JCT played good football and scored two goals. Both the goals were scored via left side of Mohun Bagan. The first goal came in 46th minute, the attack started when Mohanraj failed to intercept a move in left flank and the JCT player crossed the ball which Zenith could not clear properly and the ball went straight to Penn whose shot from edge of box went inside goal with Shilton having no chance to make a save.
Branco missed a very easy chance in 52nd minute, Chiddi had lobbed the ball for unmarked Branco but he could not convert from close range. JCT scored their 2nd goal in 55th minute when Baljit got a long ball from defence, controlled it well, entered the box with Masih besides him and pushed the ball past Shilton to make it 2-0. Mohanraj was nowhere near his position and so Baljit easily got hold of the ball.
It is surprising that a good player like Mohanraj is in such a bad form now. Coach replaced him with Mandi in last match but he also could not perform, so Karim had no other option but to field Mohanraj again today. May be coach might think of using Zenith in left back in the next match as Surkumar will be back in right back position.
Karim then replaced Micky and brought in Suraj in 57th minute. This was the 10th match of Micky this year and surprisingly other than the first two matches, he has not been able to perform well so far. He is playing in a vital position in central midfield and due to his non-performance, Mohun Bagan midfield is looking a lot static and sometimes out of ideas during the matches.
Karim then changed his formation to 4-3-3 with the advent of Suraj Mandal. In 65th minute, a nasty incident resulted in replacement of Mohanraj who had to be hospitalized. Mohanraj tried to control a ball in left flank, was kicked in his stomach by a JCT player and he fell down and even vomited. An ambulance arrived in the scene and took him off. Surprisingly, the JCT player did not even receive a yellow card. Subho Kumar replaced Mohanraj.
Karim again promptly changed the formation to 3-4-3 and this worked as in the last 20 minutes, Mariners played an inspiring football. In 71st minute, Zenith and Sakatar clashed heads and both players continued playing with their head bandaged.
Mohun Bagan made their final change in 77th minute when Snehasish came in place of Ishfaq.
Branco scored a world class goal in 84th minute when his shot from about 30 yards out curled and went to back of net with goalkeeper having no chance whatsoever to save the ball. 2 minutes later, Mariners was denied a certain penalty when Suraj was brought down by not 1 but 2 players and surprisingly referee waved play on. Television replay showed it was an absolute clear penalty and both referee and linesman were very close to the incident but still they both turned a blind eye. If this kind of purposeful refeering continues, it is not possible for any football team to score goals and win matches. Mohun Bagan players rightly protested and Dipak Mandal was booked.
Snehasish crossed a ball which hit hand of Branco and this time again referee did not waste any time to book Branco, and thus he will miss the next match against Viva Kerala, as he was booked in last match also.
Branco got another chance to score but he headed out from handshaking distance of the goal, he definitely should have done better. In another move, Marcos got the ball from James in edge of box but instead of taking a shot, he square passed the ball and wasted a very easy chance.
In 90th minute, Dipak was shown a yellow card for second time and received marching orders for a tackle on JCT player. The tackle was absolutely clean. AIFF should see the video recording of the match and this kind of refereeing ruins a football game, and in the last few matches all the decisions are going against only one team i.e. Mohun Bagan. This referee should be censured for these decisions.
In injury time, Suraj Mandal got a pass from Marcos inside the box but his right footed shot missed target by inches.
Mohun Bagan got the last chance of the match when they got a direct free kick from outside box. Marcos took the shot but the ball ballooned over the post.
To summarize, Mohun Bagan played well in patches, in first half and last 20 minutes of 2nd half, missed quite a few easy chances, was denied one certain penalty, and Dipak wrongly received marching orders. Today referee flashed yellow cards to 4 players of Mohun Bagan other than Dipak Mandal who are Rakesh, Mohanraj, Branco and Shilton.
Branco and Dipak will miss next match against Viva Kerala which will be held in Salt Lake Stadium on October 12th at 4.30 pm.
