MOHUN BAGAN STARTS KOLKATA PREMIER LEAGUE ON A WINNING NOTE
Kolkata ,
21-Oct, 2009 : Mohun Bagan 2nd team played inspiring football today to beat Kalighat Club 1-0 in their first match in Kolkata premier league. Under-19 player Subhojit Majumdar scored the only goal of the match.
In today's match, Mariners had only 2 players from their first team, Chiddi and Dipak Mandal. Credit goes to coach Karim Bencharifa who has kept all the players of the squad in shape. We have seen that even between I league matches he had arranged practice matches so that the players who are not playing gets match practice. This reaped rich rewards as Mariners completely dominated the game. Such was the pressure from Mohun Bagan that Goalkeeper Sangram did not have to make a single save in the 90 minutes.
The most positive part from today's match is that Mohun Bagan created at least 15 scoring chances, but the negative part is that out of these chances only 1 was converted to goal. Chiddi alone missed at least 6 chances. Chiddi tried a lot, he did everything right other than the scoring part. Kalighat coach had employed man marking on Chiddi, but he came to midfield, nicely controlled the ball, distributed the ball to the flanks and even moved to scoring position quite often, but somehow right now luck is not in his side and his last touch betrayed him throughout the match.
After match, Karim jokingly said, "Chiddi told me that he is keeping all the goals in his pocket for important matches." On a serious note, he said, "Chiddi is giving full effort, but somehow he is not being able to score. I sincerely hope he comes back to form soon." Of note, Chiddi has so far scored 7 goals in 11 matches this year which is not at all a bad record. Yes, he has missed at least 15 more chances in this 7 matches, but credit goes to him for always being there in correct scoring position where a striker should be.
Coming back to today's match, Manish, Suraj, Branco also missed easy chances to score. Subhojit, Ramluah, Manish had a great match today. If there was a Man of the Match award, it should have surely gone to Subhojit, not only for the brilliant goal that he scored, but also because he kept on operating down the right flank, and from his cross itself at least 6 goals were missed today.
In 2nd minute, both Chiddi and Suraj failed to push Subhojit's curling free kick inside goal. In 4th minute, Manish's header from Subhojit's free kick was saved by goalkeeper. In 10th minute, Chiddi nicely shielded the ball inside box, took a half turn but his rasping shot hit post. In 13th minute, Chiddi's shot was blocked by defender in front of goal. From corner, ball went straight to unmarked Karan, but unfortunately he could not even touch the ball.
Mohun Bagan scored the goal in 20th minute when Chiddi brilliantly gave a through pass to Subhojit, who took the ball from right wing and from edge of the box unleashed a right footer which goalkeeper had absolutely no chance whatsoever to save.
Midway in first half, Chiddi beat offside trap but from handshaking distance from goal, his head went straight to goalkeeper. Santa took a brilliant free kick soon after that went straight to Suraj but his header went ballooning over the crossbar. Few minutes before lemon break, from Chiddi cross, Subhojit shot wide from close range.
In 2nd half, first 10 minutes saw Mariners miss chances galore. In 46th minute, Subhojit's well measured cross went straight to Manish, but he shot over the crossbar. In the next minute, Chiddi controlled the ball nicely, evaded his marker, but the bar again came to Kalighat's rescue when his shot hit cross bar and went out. In 49th minute, Chiddi-Subhojit combined well and the latter's cross found Chiddi in a scoring position, but he could not control his head and the ball went out. In 54th minute, Suraj's shot was saved by goalkeeper and the ball went to Manish who blasted the ball over bar.
In 57th minute, Chiddi missed the chance of the match and even it could also be considered as the easiest chance ever missed by him when Zenith brilliantly made a down the flank run, passed the ball towards Chiddi, who only had to get the faintest of touch to score, but somehow after his push the ball went over crossbar.
Subhajit was again in the thick of action twice. First time, he got the ball from Branco and his well measured cross went straight to Suraj but his head went out. In the next movement, from his pass, Chiddi's shot was brilliantly saved by Kalighat goalkeeper.
Two fresh legs combined in the form of Branco and Souvik in place of Santa and Subhojit. In 80th minute, from corner, Chiddi nicely chest trapped the ball but Branco's shot went out of target from very close range.
In 81st minute, Kuluthungan came in place of Chiddi. Few minutes before end of match, Manish passed the ball to Kulu, who dodged past 1 player but with only goalkeper to beat, he pushed the ball out.
Mohun Bagan thus won the match 1-0. The scoreline could easily have been 12-0. Performance of reserve bench players surely have brought smiles in the face of coach and supporters. We just hope Chiddi gets back to scoring goals from the next match itself which is an all important I league match against East Bengal on 25th October.
