CHIDDI SCORES 4 FROM HIS POCKET AS MARINERS THRASH EAST BENGAL BY 5-3

Kolkata , 25-Oct, 2009 : Mohun Bagan today beat East Bengal 5-3 in an I league match held in Salt Lake Stadium. Mohun Bagan had already created the record by beating consecutively East Bengal and now the 5 goal record which they had been boasting for so long had been broken by Karim's Mariners today. 34 years back Mohun Bagan conceded 5 goals against East Bengal and one supporter, Umakanta Palodhi, had committed suicide. He must have watched this match from heaven and blessed the team.

Chiddi said before match that he has few goals in his pocket reserved for East Bengal and he kept his word and scored 4 goals while Manish scored the other goal. Chiddi was criticized by few people for missing chances but those so called football pundits forgot that Chiddi before today's match had scored 7 goals already in 10 matches. Chiddi's 4 goals today is the highest goal scored by a player in a Kolkata derby match, surpassing 3 goals by Amiya Deb(1934) and Baichung Bhutia (1997). Chiddi showed that he has and will be scoring more goals for Mohun Bagan this year. Karim said jokingly after match, "Chiddi has much more goals still there in his pocket."

Karim had rightly said after the last match in Kolkata league, "Chiddi is a very good striker. You should not forget that he is always in the right position in the box and he is creating chances quite often. Only luck is not in his side and so he is missing chances. I am sure he can't be kept quite for long."

This was perhaps the best match of Mohun Bagan after last year's Federation Cup final win against Dempo. Mohun Bagan totally outplayed opponents today and could have scored few more goals.

Lot of things were written against Karim by few media questioning his tactics. It is unfortunate that few of them are biased against foreign coaches especially Karim. This is perpaps the best phase of Mohun Bagan after 2001, where under the coaching of Karim Bencharifa, Mohun Bagan has won 3 tournaments and finished runners up in 3 tournaments, and today Mohun Bagan created history by scoring 5 goals against arch rivals.

Like other matches, today also Karim make few brilliant moves and his match reading was absolutely brilliant as usual.

1. He kept Manish in first team instead of Subho Kumar, Micky and Kuluthungan which was a great bold move.

2. He kept Mandi in stopper position, he could have played safe by putting Surkumar in stopper and Zenith in right back, but he had full faith in his young players and has kept all the players of his squad ready and match fit. Karim has always nurtured few young players like Gourmangi, Naoba, Robert, Vashum in Churchill and Rakesh, Lalampuia, Shilton, Mandi in Mohun Bagan. He believes that, "I don't believe in senior or junior, Bengali or non-Bengali. I will use my best 11 players available for the match." About Mandi and Rakesh, he said, "Both of them played really well. They are both around 22 years of age and see how they played against two foreign strikers. I am very proud of them."

3. Karim never has the habit of crying, "I don't have this player, I don't have that player" before match. It is to be noted that Mohun Bagan today did not have as many as 5 defenders in the squad including Dipak, Manju, Vashan, Azim, Habibur.

4. Today when Barreto got injured, Karim made a brilliant substitution bringing on Ishfaq who played from a little deep, forming the bridge between midfield and Chiddi. Mariners played in 4-4-1-1 formation from then on.

5. Shilton fumbled a bit and was not in his best form today and coach promptly substituted him with Sangram after lemon break. This also changed the complexion of the match.

6. Karim never blames his players and always stands behind his team members if they makes any mistake and today he stood strongly besides Shilton.

Coming back to today's match, against run of play Mohun Bagan conceded a goal in 9th minute when unmarked Nirmal headed the ball in from Renedy corner. Mohun Bagan came back strongly and equalized within 8 minutes. Surkumar snatched the ball near touch line in midfield, made a darting run down the right flank, entered box past Govin and gave a brilliant back pass to Chiddi who neatly placed the ball inside goal.

Mariners took the lead in 23rd minute. This time the move started from Barreto, he controlled the ball nicely in midfield, moved a few paces to the left and gave a forward pass to Snehasish in left flank. Snehasish's brilliant cross was headed by James towards Chiddi, but his shot deflected off goalkeeper and went to Manish outside box whose powerful shot went inside goal, a dream debut indeed from the Delhi lad, who came to Mohun Bagan on, ex-player and an ardent support of Mohun Bagan, Nigerian Bernard's advice.

Mohun Bagan then came close to scoring twice. Barreto and Chiddi were combining so well from the start of today's match and was causing panic time and again in opponent's defence. Chiddi gave a brilliant pass to Barreto who nicely turned and tried to take a right footed shot but Nirmal timely intercepted the ball. In another move, James center went to far corner, Abhra came out to catch the ball and missed flight, Barreto leaped brilliantly and headed the ball but the woodwork came to East Bengal's rescue.

Barreto brilliance paved the way for the 3rd goal of Mariners in 33rd minute. Barreto brilliantly made a move down the right side of box past Nabi who used his hands to push Barreto, but Barreto nicely kept his balance and his measured cross went to Chiddi who brilliantly headed the ball in to make the scoreline 3-1.

Shilton conceded a horrible goal in 35th minute, when the ball deflected off Yakubu, took few bounces and went inside goal over Shilton who had come out of charge to collect the ball. Just at the stroke of half time, Renedy took a curling free kick which Yakubu got a touch and the ball went to the back of the net past Shilton.

Shilton had a little bad day today but he is a very talented goalkeeper and he has always performed well and we are sure he will make a great come back. These mistakes are part of the match. We have seen Oliver Kahn conceding goal by allowing the ball to roll in between his legs in World Cup final. Even after match, Karim stood strongly beside Shilton.

After the change of ends, Chiddi scored his 3rd and Mohun Bagan's 4th goal in 46th minute. Snehasish who was in the best of his form today in his revenge match against East Bengal again made a stupendous run past opponent defender and from his cross James brilliantly leaned his body backwards and headed the ball for Chiddi who blasted the ball in to complete his hattrick.

In 57th minute, Barreto who played so well today was fouled badly by Nabi, he limped off with tear in his eyes and was replaced by Ishfaq.

In 67th minute, Chiddi was again in the thick of action when he headed the ball in from Marcos' corner between 4 East Bengal players and made the scoreline 5-3 in favor of Mariners. Between the two goals, Chiddi's head from James center ballooned over cross bar.

Mohun Bagan played tactical game for remaining part of the match and defended really well and the final scoreline remained 5-3 in their favor. It is indeed a historic victory for Mohun Bagan.

Sangram looked very confident as a substitute. Though defence was a little shaky in the first half gained composure in the 2nd half and defended really well post interval.

Manish and Marcos were absolutely brilliant today and did their job, assigned by coach, to perfection. Marcos as a holding medio nicely assisted his defence while Manish did marshall the midfield to perfection. James and Snehasish was equally good to their task in the flanks. Snehasish looked extra charged in today's match. Barreto and Chiddi looked in ominous form today.

Due to injury, Barreto will not accompany team to Shillong where Mohun Bagan will play against Shillong Lajong on 29th October. Mohanraj will miss next match as he received his 2nd yellow card today.

After match today, Karim said, "I am very happy that Mohun Bagan got 3 points today. I am also happy that we took revenge on arch rivals. This is indeed a big day for Mohun Bagan. I am happy that I contributed a little to make the thousands of Mohun Bagan fans, and millions more who watched the match live, happy. For this, whole team management and all players should also be given credit."

The 18-member team for the match against Lajong is: Sangram, Shilton, Dipak, Rakesh, Mandi, Surkumar, Zenith, Biswajit Saha, Marcos, Subho Kumar, Manish, Kuluthungan, James Singh, Tomba, Snehasish, Ishfaq, Branco and Chiddi.
