BRILLIANT TACTICS BY COACH KARIM ENSURES WIN OVER LAJONG FC

29-Oct, 2009 : Mohun Bagan beat Lajong FC 2-1 in an away match in I league today. Chiddi and Marcos scored the goals for Mariners.
The match was a very tough one especially because of the ground which was very hard with uneven bounce. Along with the players, coach Karim has to be given credit for this win, he controlled the game from reserve bench and his tactical change ensured 3 points.
He knew that his players would take time to adjust to the ground condition and that Lajong FC players will run fast in the first half, so he opted for 4-4-1-1 formation in 1st half. He allowed the Lajong players to run, he very well knew that it is not possible for the home team to play full 90 minutes in the same pace. He knew Lajong players with good support from the crowd will go all out in first half and team needed to defend well to stop them. In 2nd half, he put Ishfaq up with Chiddi and went to 4-4-2. After Mohun Bagan took the lead, for last 15 minutes, Karim again concentrated more on defending to get 3 points.
Sangram was flawless under the bar. Masih looked a little shaky in defence in first half, but he regained composure after the break and gave good support to Dipak who was in his usual good form today with his perfect tackling and covering. Surkumar also overlapped nicely. Snehashish and Marcos was brilliant in midfield today.
Karim has put Marcos as holding medio for the last three matches and this has paid off heavily as he is giving good support to defence as well as marshalling the midfield. He has become the pivot of the team. Added to this, today Marcos scored a brilliant goal from direct free kick.
Chiddi who scored 4 goals in the last match, continued with his good form today. Not only did he score 1 goal but playing as a lone striker for most part of the match he put continued pressure on Lajong defence.
Mohun Bagan made 2 changes in their starting XI from the last match, bringing on Sangram, Dipak, Biswajit, Ishfaq in place of Shilton, Mandi, Mohanraj and Barreto. Mariners made a cautious start and Lajong tried to build up pressure, but defence was rock solid and did not allow any space to the opponents. In 16th minute, Mohun Bagan missed their first chance when James corner went straight to unmarked Snehashish whose head sailed over the bar.
Lajong tried to break through in a couple of moves but Dipak and Biswajit made timely tackles to avert danger. Mohun Bagan had real problem adjusting to the ground condition as the ball was bouncing like ping pong ball. After match, Karim said, "The atmosphere is fantastic here, 2nd best after Kolkata, but unfortunately the ground condition was extremely bad and it is very difficult for a good football match here. Credit goes to my players who gradually adjusted to the ground condition and scored 2 goals."
In 32nd minute, Ishfaq nicely lobbed the ball over defence and went to a good position to cross the ball, but again uneven bounce made his job tougher and he completely miscued the ball.
The change of ends saw Mohun Bagan going to 4-4-2. Lajong got a penalty in 52nd minute, when Masih fouled Tuboi inside penalty box. Masih was shown yellow card and as a result he will miss the next match. Aibor scored from the penalty when he shot straight, Sangram had no chance whatsoever having dived to his right.
Mohun Bagan came back strongly and within minutes James' free kick caused panic inside Lajong defence. In 58th minute, James corner went agonizingly close to Ishfaq as he had leaped to head the ball.
Mohun Bagan equalized in 63rd minute. Ishfaq gave a pass to Snehashish in left, who embarked on a solo run before crossing the ball for Chiddi, who was in a perfect position to head the ball inside goal.
Mohun Bagan took the lead in 66th minute. Mohun Bagan got a direct free outside the box. Marcos bend the ball like Beckham and made the scoreline 2-1 in favor of Mohun Bagan.
In 73rd minute, Snehashish delivered another cross for Chiddi who connected the ball to perfection but the ball just went over cross bar.
Lajong tried to put some pressure in the last 10 minutes, but Mohun Bagan defended well to take full 3 points from extreme conditions.
Marcos was adjudged Man of the Match.
Mohun Bagan now has 9 points from 5 matches and will next play against Mumbai FC on 2nd November in Barasat Stadium. The match will start at 4.30 p.m. and will be telecasted live in Zee Sports.
Mariners will reach Kolkata tomorrow and will have a rest day. On Saturday practice session is at 3.30 p.m. in Mohun Bagan ground followed by 10.30 a.m. on Sunday in the same venue.
