MOHUN BAGAN LOSE 3 POINTS AGAINST MUMBAI FC
Kolkata ,
02-Nov, 2009 : Mohun Bagan went down fighting 2-1 against Mumbai FC today. Mohun Bagan created innumerable chances and played inspiring football today but unfortunately conceded 2 bad goals and gave away 3 points.
Football is definitely a team game where to win, a team requires to show good team spirit, good tactical play, attack down the flanks and of course last but not least converting chances. Mohun Bagan did everything right today and kept pressure on Mumbai FC defence throughout the match but missed few very easy chances to score and conceded two very soft goals.
The statistics at the end of the match show Mohun Bagan won 10 corners today, Mumbai FC earned none. Mohun Bagan had 12 shots on target that was saved either by defence or goalkeeper, but Mumbai FC had only 2 shots which was on target. In fact, those two attempts were the 2 goals that they scored which came as a result of goalkeeping error.
There were three changes in the team from last match, Mandi, Shilton and Mohanraj replaced Masih, Sangram and Biswajit. Just before start of match, Sangram got injured when he fell in bathroom before dressing up for the match which resulted in him receiving 5 stitches in his leg which definitely rules him out for the next 2 away matches.
In first half, Mohun Bagan played in 4-4-2 formation with Ishfaq and Chiddi forming the pair upfront. Mohun Bagan conceded the first goal in the 1st minute itself. In fact, it was the first attack of the match. A cross came from right side which Abhishek Yadav managed to head, the ball ballooned up and went inside goal, the head had no power at all and was within reach of Shilton and he could have easily fisted the ball out for corner.
Mohun Bagan came back strongly and build up their play nicely, relying mainly on ground passes. There were quite a few good moves down the right flank by Surkumar and James. In 10th minute, from James cross, goalkeeper cleared the ball, and Manish had a cracking shot but unfortunately it hit a Mumbai player and went out. In 14th minute, Chiddi was fouled near Mumbai box when Anas who was the last man of defence pulled at his shirt and brought him down. It was a clear case of red card, but referee completely overlooked the incident.
After the first goal, Shilton touched the ball next around 20th minute mark, this showed the supremacy of Mariners. Snehasish continued with his good form in left flank. From his corner in 23rd minute, Marcos tried a curling shot which narrowly missed target.
Manish came close to scoring when his shot from out of the box was saved by goalkeeper diving to his left. Manish also paired well with Marcos in midfield. Likewise, Marcos and Chiddi also took couple of shots from inside box that was nicely blocked by Mumbai defence.
In 39th minute, Ishfaq missed a blinder when he headed the ball over crossbar from a James cross. Within 2 minutes, Mumbai FC scored their 2nd goal. Shilton had collected a ball but Mandi was very close to him and both collided, the ball went out of his grip, Bashiru scored the easiest goal of his life when he had to just push the bal inside empty goal.
This is the second consecutive match when Shilton has conceded bad goals, but we should not forget that in past Shilton has single handedly won few matches for Mohun Bagan. Even this year in IFA Shield semi final, he delivered a noteworthy performance.
After the change of ends, Mariners continued to pile pressure on the visitors. Karim brought in Branco in place of not-so-impressive Ishfaq. Crosses kept coming from both flanks, but Mumbai FC was defending with 7 players and managed to win all the aerial balls and goalkeeper also made few good saves.
Marcos was pushed up by Karim in 2nd half and this also helped and more chances were created. In 54th minute, Snehashish sent in a low cross that went straight to Marcos but Mumbai defence intercepted nicely. In the next minute, Snehashish brilliantly cut in and his cross was very well collected by goalkeeper, Branco was inches away from getting a touch at the ball.
Mohun Bagan made in 2-1 in 60th minute. Marcos gave a forward pass to Branco whose shot from an acute angle was saved by goalkeeper, ball went to unmarked Snehashish who pushed the ball inside goal.
The bar came to rescue of Mumbai FC in 67th minute when Chiddi's shot from outside box beat goalkeeper and hit post. In 68th minute, Karim brought in Tomba in place of Mandi and changed his formation to 3-5-2 but unfortunately for Mohun Bagan, in 75th minute, Snehashish, who was one of the best players for Mariners today, had to be replaced by Kuluthungan, as he suffered an injury to his leg.
In 76th minute, Chiddi-Marcos combination resulted in a left footed shot taken by Marcos which was on target, but goalkeeper dived to his left to save a certain goal.
In 80th minute, Kulu missed a very easy chance. Tomba did all the hard work with his down-the-flank run, entered box and gave a pass which Kulu blasted over the crossbar. 5 minutes later, it was Kulu again in the thick of action when he missed yet another very easy chance. Marcos' through pass found both Chiddi and Kulu in scoring position inside box, but Kulu took the shot hurriedly and the ball sailed over crossbar.
In injury time, Mumbai FC almost scored an own goal from Marcos' attempt, but unluckily for Mariners the ball went straight across the face of the goal.
Mohun Bagan will have their practice session at 10.30 tomorrow morning. Team will leave for Goa on Thursday to play their next away match against Sporting de Goa on November 7th.
