DEFENSIVE LAPSE BY MARINERS LEADS TO 2-2 DRAW AGAINST SPORTING DE GOA
Kolkata ,
07-Nov, 2009 : The match between Mohun Bagan and Sporting de Goa that was played in Goa today ended in 2-2 draw.
Sporting de Goa played better football, especially in 2nd half, than Mariners and came close to scoring few times but Shilton, who conceded two soft goals in the last match, saved the day for Mohun Bagan as he made at least 3 great saves today.
Mohun Bagan has so far conceded 13 goals in this I league which is the worst record along with Sporting de Goa. Today also Sporting scored the goals due to defensive error. Mohun Bagan is scoring goals but unfortunately is letting in easy goals in almost every match. We hope that the Asian player in trial might be able to provide stability in defence in coming days.
Coach Karim put Branco in the first team along with Chiddi as the striking force. Mohun Bagan made a good start and for first 5 minutes they kept pressure on Sporting defence via both flanks, but then Sporting came back strongly and Amos earned two corners in quick succession. Shilton looked confident today from the start and his first touch of the ball was when he nicely leaped up and collected the ball before Amos could head the ball from a corner.
Snehashish had a good first half and his run down the left flank caused panic in Sporting defence time and again.
Sporting continued their domination till Amos gave them the lead in 23rd minute. Dipak gave a back pass to Rakesh, whose mistimed header went to Amos, who nicely controlled the ball and took a shot from outside the box which Shilton had absolutely no chance to save the ball. It was a very costly error by Rakesh which resulted in the goal.
Mohun Bagan regained their composure and started building attacks down the flanks after conceding the goal. Within minutes, Marcos cross from right unluckily deflected off a defender and went straight to goalkeeper. In 30th minute, it was Marcos again in the thick of action when his cross went to Chiddi, but as he tried to chest trap the ball, Sporting defence cleared the ball for safety.
Mohun Bagan equalized in 33rd minute. Snehasish passed the ball to Mohanraj in left flank from whose low cross, Branco connected the ball to perfection as he placed the ball to far corner of the goal.
In 35th minute, Sporting goalkeeper made a double save. James and Manish played a wall pass and ball went to Chiddi whose shot was saved by goalkeeper, the rebound ball went to Branco who promptly took another shot, but again Sporting custodian came to his team's rescue as he saved a sure goal.
In 36th minute, against run of play, Amos dribbled past Dipak and took a left footed shot that took a lucky deflection off Masih and went out.
Mohun Bagan took the lead in 42nd minute. James gave a intelligent chip pass to Marcos who placed the ball to the back of the net past stranded goalkeeper.
Sporting equalized in the next minute itself. From Amos' pass, Joseph who was standing unmarked inside the box pushed the ball inside goal via his left foot. There was absolutely no defending from Mohun Bagan as the player was standing completely unmarked.
In injury time of 1st half, Branco missed another chance when from Snehasish's perfect cross, he got his head to the ball but could not direct the ball into goal.
After the change of ends, in 53rd minute, it was Branco again who could not score from a very advantageous position inside penalty box. Chiddi's pass found Branco but he shot straight to goalkeeper from close range.
Branco who scored a brilliant goal missed couple of very easy chances and Karim must have thought that Suraj Mandal would give better result and so made the change in 56th minute. Unfortunately, this change did not help as Suraj disappointed with his performance.
Sporting de Goa looked much better in 2nd half especially Joseph and Amos who both played outstanding football. Shilton made quite a few good saves in the second half.
Karim brought in Ishfaq and Tomba in place of Snehashish and James but unfortunately these inclusions did not result into great dividend. From counter attack, Tomba and Manish took two shots from outside the box but in both cases, the ball ballooned over crossbar.
Last match Mohun Bagan played inspiring football but lost to Mumbai FC due to Shilton's goalkeeping error. On the contrary, today performance of Mariners was very ordinary, especially in 2nd half and Shilton made at least 3 brilliant saves to give 1 point to Mohun Bagan.
Looking at the positives, Shilton has got back his lost confidence, Branco scored a brilliant goal, Marcos and Chiddi tried a lot but did not get good support. Snehasish also played well in 1st half. After few good matches, Manish's performance was disappointing today. Ishfaq's name will also be there among the non-performers today.
Mohun Bagan will play their next away match against Pune FC on 13th November. Today was a bad day at the office but still Mariners got 1 point, and we are sure Mohun Bagan will come back strongly from the next match.
We should also remember that Mohun Bagan is yet to play any match with full team. Today also Mohun Bagan did not get the service of 3 key players of the team, Barreto, Sangram and Manju.
