CHIDDI-SEUOKA COMBINATION EXCELS AS MARINERS BEAT PEERLESS 3-0

02-Dec, 2009 : Mohun Bagan today beat Peerless 3-0 in a Kolkata Premier League match. Chiddi, Seuoka and Biswajit scored for Mariners. Mohun Bagan are now in the top of the league table with 12 points from 4 matches.
Coach Karim made one change in the starting lineup today bringing on Ishfaq in place of Snehasish. Like last match, Seuoka started as striking partner of Chiddi. They combined well and created many chances throughout the match. Regarding Seuoka's performance, after match, coach Karim said, "He is an utility player. His inclusion has definitely helped Mohun Bagan. He can play in the flanks, behind striker as well as in striker position. In the absence of Barreto, he can play as a striker along with Chiddi."
Mohun Bagan today also completely dominated the match and put relentless pressure on the opponents and could have scored at least 3 more goals.
Seuoka almost scored in the 8th minute. Tomba's brilliant run down the right flank resulted in a cross towards Seuoka who promptly took a shot that narrowly missed the target. In 11th minute, Mohun Bagan defence was caught napping as Md. Muktar got a loose ball but his shot went over crossbar.
Mohun Bagan got a direct freekick in 18th minute, Seuoka curled the ball nicely but Peerless goalkeeper dived to his right to make a good save. In the next minute, Souvik who again had a very good match took a right footed shot from outside box but goalkeeper again collected the ball nicely.
In 23rd minute, from Zenith's center, Chiddi leaped to head the ball but goalkeeper fisted it away. Micky got the ball in midfield, gave a pass to Ishfaq, who made a darting run down the left flank, sent a low cross but Seuoka could not reach the ball, thus wasting a rather easy chance to score.
In 29th minute, Seuoka who was constantly switching positions, sent a fabulous cross from right flank but Chiddi's head hit the woodwork.
In 37th minute, this time Chiddi gave a through pass towards Seuoka who nicely evaded the offside trap but his attempt just missed the target.
After missing many chances, Mariners scored the first goal in 43rd minute. The goal resulted from a brilliant move. Ishfaq got a ball in left flank from Souvik, hold the ball for few seconds giving Biswajit time to overlap, then gave a delightful through pass towards Biswajit from whose back pass, with marker behind him, Chiddi unleashed a snap left footed shot that went to the back of the net. Peerless custodian got a hand to it but the shot had too much power and the ball went inside goal.
After lemon break, Karim brought in Micky in place of Lalramluah. Mohun Bagan had a close shave in 49th minute but Md. Muktar miscued the shot. In 59th minute, Ishfaq almost scored from a corner when his shot foxed the goalkeeper but hit the crossbar and went out.
In 68th minute, Seuoka sent a neat cross, this time from left side, but unluckily Chiddi failed to head the ball. In the next minute, Seukoa's center went to unmarked Ishfaq but he mistimed the head and the ball ballooned up and went to goalkeeper.
In 75th minute, Mandi got injured when Timothy hit him off the ball in midfield. This was certainly a red card offense, but referee surprisingly did not book Timothy. Mandi and Azim played well in central defence with good support from Zenith and Biswajit.
Snehasish came in place of Ishfaq in 76th minute. Within 2 minutes, Seuoka scored the 2nd goal for Mohun Bagan. Getting a pass from Souvik in left flank, Chiddi took his time, controlled the ball and then sent a cross to Seuoka who made a diving head to score the goal.
In 81st minute, Azim miskicked a ball and it ballooned up and was going out for corner but Shilton kept his head cool and made a brilliant save by heading the ball towards Mandi.
Karim made the final change by bringing on Branco in place of Tomba, who again had another good match today. After Branco came in, Karim pushed Seuoka back to midfield. In injury time, Mohun Bagan scored the 3rd goal. Micky showed glimpse of his class when he gave a through pass which Biswajit placed inside goal past onrushing goalkeeper. Unlike last match, today Mariners made quite a few good moves down left flank and Biswajit particularly played well as he overlapped nicely and sent some good crosses.
Seuoka deservedly was adjudged Man of the Match today.
Talking to us after match, Barreto said, "I will be most probably joining practice by this weekend." Karim also said, "I think Barreto will be able to play the Kolkata league match on 11th."
Coach expressed his satisfaction regarding team's performance and said, "I am quite happy with the way team is slowly shaping up. We are playing good football, creating chances and winning matches. Now I have got more options in all positions."
Karim is going to Singapore today to see his newborn daughter, Raniya. He will be back on 9th December. Till then, Mridul Banerjee will act as the Chief Coach. Tomorrow's practice session will be at 10.30 a.m.
