MOHUN BAGAN BEAT GEORGE TELEGRAPH 1-0 IN KOLKATA PREMIER LEAGUE; MB JUNIORS WIN 6-2

Kolkata , 05-Dec, 2009 : Mohun Bagan beat George Telegraph 1-0 in a Kolkata Premier league match today. Chiddi scored the goal for Mariners. Mohun Bagan are now in the top of the league with 15 points from 5 matches. In Kingston Nikhil Nandy Football Academy Tournament, Mohun Bagan won 6-2 against Lake Town Milan Sangha. In quarter final on December 13th, they will play against winner of Kalyani Municipality and Avenue Sammilani.

Mohun Bagan's first positive movement came in 8th minute when Chiddi released Tomba on the line but the latter could not cross the ball, instead gave a back pass to overlapping Zenith from whose center Chiddi's header went over crossbar. In 12th minute, from Zenith's cross, Souvik received the ball nicely inside George penalty box but delayed to take the shot, thus wasting a chance.

In 16th minute, Mariners got a free kick in the left flank, Ishfaq gave a pass to Biswajit at the edge of the box but he took a feeble attempt at the goal.

In 20th minute, Chiddi came down to midfield, snatched a ball and gave a through pass to Zenith from whose cross Tomba attempted a backvolley, but could not connect the ball properly.

The first half saw both teams attacking but Mariners got more chance to score; however, in 25th minute, there was a close shave for Mohun Bagan goal when Francis ran few paces, dribbled past Azim and took a shot that deflected off Mandi for corner.

Today Chiddi took extra load as he was falling back to help midfield. Not only was he trying to score but also he gave some delightful through pass to initiate some good moves down both flanks. When asked how to motivates himself to play well in all these matches, Chiddi said, "Every match is big match for me, my job is to score goals and I will try to continue to do so."

In 29th minute, from one such pass of Chiddi, Ishfaq gave a back pass to Souvik but the latter's shot went straight to goalkeeper. In the next minute itself, Seuoka showed brilliant skill when he dribbled past 2 players in left flank and cut in to enter the box but his low cross found nobody in the box.

Mariners took the lead in 37th minute. Tomba received a mispass from George defence, gave a pass to Chiddi, who controlled the ball nicely and from outside the box unleashed a powerful shot that went to the back of the net. This was Chiddi's 21st goal for Mariners. After match, Chiddi said, "The way things are going, this could turn out to be my best season in India, but we are now only half way through the season."

In 40th minute, Ishfaq dribbled past one player and from his center, Seuoka attempted to take a backvolley but the ball went out of play. Within 2 minutes, Seuoka almost scored. Chiddi fired another thunderous shot from almost the same position where he scored the goal, but this time goalkeeper dived to his right to make a save, the ball ballooned up and throwing his body in the air, Seuoka made a brilliant attempt to score but the ball just went over the bar. Seuoka today was a little disappointed with himself, and after match he said, "I am missing some easy chances, I will have to score from these chances."

At the stroke of lemon break, from Ishfaq's short corner, Souvik got the ball at the edge of the box and took a nice curling shot to the far post but it narrowly missed the target.

In 2nd half, George Telegraph played better football and controlled the game. After defending for the first 15 minutes of the half, from Seuoka's pass, Ishfaq took a snap shot that went out of target. Mohun Bagan then made two changes within 10 minutes bringing on Snehasish and Ramluah in place of Ishfaq and Micky. This backfired a little as Souvik who played so well in first half, could not combine well with Ramluah in central midfield and George players put relentless pressure on Mohun Bagan defence. Mandi played very well today and was rightly adjudged Man of the Match.

In 77th minute, Ramluah unneccesarily fouled Zotin outside the box. However, Abiola's direct free kick went straight to Shilton who played with confidence today.

Mariners made two brilliant moves in last 5 minutes of the match. The first one in 85th minute resulted from Seuoka-Chiddi combination. Seuoka got the ball in midfield, sent a pass to Chiddi who was waiting in the right flank. Chiddi gave a return pass to Seuoka in the box, but Seuoka just could not reach the ball and it went straight to goalkeeper. 2 minutes later, Tomba initiated the move from left flank, gave a pass to Chiddi, who passed the ball to Seuoka in right flank. Seuoka took his time before sending a cross to Snehashish, who headed the ball down for Chiddi. Chiddi had a marker with him and so preferred to pass the ball to unmarked Ramluah, but the best movement of the half resulted in a poor shot from him which went out. In injury time, Mohun Bagan made the last change as Subho Kumar came as a replacement for Ramluah.

About poor performance in 2nd half, Chiddi said, "I think the players were a little relaxed after break and we could not play to our potential. We were not getting support from midfield in 2nd half, but this can happen in few matches. Most important thing is that we got 3 points."

Mohun Bagan's next match in Kolkata Premier League in on 11th December against Mohammedan AC.
