MARINERS START FEDERATION CUP WITH A THUMPING WIN BY 4-1 OVER MOHAMMEDAN SPORTING
Guwahati ,
21-Dec, 2009 : Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan Sporting 4-1 in their first group league match in Federation Cup. Barreto scored 2 goals while Chiddi and Sueoka netted one each for the defending Champions. Barreto scored his 200th goal today in India.
Mohun Bagan was in the attacking frame of mind from start and made their intentions clear when in the 1st minute itself from Sueoka's pass, James crossed the ball for Barreto whose header narrowly missed target. Mohun Bagan could have taken the lead in the very next minute itself. From Surkumar's cross, Chiddi headed down the ball for Sueoka but the chance went begging as his shot from close range went out.
Mohun Bagan played a very good team game today. Not only did Sueoka combined well with Barreto and Chiddi and created panic in Mohammedan defence, but also there was continuous pressure from both flanks with Surkumar-James and Snehasish-Biswajit floating the ball to perfection for the strikers. Rakesh Masih also had an excellent game as holding medio. In defence, Azim gave great support to Dipak who made quite a few brilliant tackles on Edu to avert danger. Captain Sangram also played with confidence as he made few very good saves.
Mariners went ahead in the 5th minute. From Snehasish's pass, Chiddi nicely got past one player but his cross was cleared for corner. Sueoka took a short corner, James crossed the ball, Barreto took a back head that hit Bipen Thapa's head and went to back of the net. This was the 200th goal of Jose Ramirez Barreto in India. We have been talking about these variations in set piece movements which Karim spends a lot of time in practice with the players.
In 9th minute, Chiddi and Barreto combined well and from the resultant pass to Sueoka, his rasping shot was blocked nicely by Anupam.
In 13th minute, Dipak made a rare mistake when his slightly mistimed tackle on Edu resulted in Mohammedan getting a free kick in right flank, but Sangram had no problem to collect the ball from the free kick.
Azim got booked in 16th minute, he lost possession of the ball but then pulled Edu down. In the next minute, Barreto floated the ball for James, but it was well covered by Jothi Kumar.
In 20th minute, Sangram made an absolutely stunning save when he dived to his right, stretched out his hand and prevented Edu's left footed shot from going in. From counter attack, Chiddi scooped the ball for Barreto, whose left footed shot deflected out for corner. We saw another variation in corner, from James' cross, Barreto tried to head the ball but referee gave free kick against him.
Mohun Bagan kept their pressure and in 23rd minute from Chiddi's flick, Sueoka took a shot from outside box but it lacked power and went straight to goalkeeper.
In 26th minute, from Surkumar's cross, due to a defensive error by Mohammedan, Mariners almost got a chance, but the ball went straight across the face of the goal.
Against run of play, Mohammedan equalized in 32nd minute. Theo's shot from outside box deflected off Mohun Bagan defence and went to unmarked Jothi Kumar who dribbled past Surkumar and took a right footed shot which Sangram had no chance to save.
In 36th minute, getting a pass from Chiddi, Snehasish's accurate cross was met by the head of Barreto, but the ball went out. In 40th minute, getting a pass from Rakesh, Sueoka ran almost 20 yards but Anupam made a timely tackle to clear the ball. Anupam was in good form today in Mohammedan defence.
In 41st minute, Mohun Bagan took the lead. From midfield, Barreto gave a brilliant pass to James Singh in right flank, who sent in a perfect cross. Chiddi and Sueoka both leaped up to head the ball, but Sueoka's head met the ball and the ball went to the far corner of the net.
Just at the stroke of half time, Barreto slipped through Mohammedan defence and went into the box, but his shot was blocked by Anupam.
The half time score was 2-1, Mariners could have scored few more goals in this half as they completely ran over their opponents.
2 minutes after lemon break, Barreto played a wall pass with Chiddi, but the ball just went out of reach of Chiddi. In 50th minute, Barreto was again in the thick of action as he scooped the ball for James, but the latter delayed to take the shot, thus wasting a chance.
After this, Mohammedan came back strongly in the match and started putting pressure but Mohun Bagan defence stood firm against the challenges.
In 58th minute, Surkumar was booked for foul on Sovan, Edu's direct free kick went over cross bar.
The pressure from Mohammedan though did not last for more than 20 minutes. In 65th minute, Rakesh nicely snatched the ball in front of his own penalty box, then ran with the ball till center circle, gave a pass to Barreto in left side, who sent in a cross for Chiddi but the ball was a little far away from his reach. In 67th minute, James almost scored when Naseem saved a certain goal by fisting the ball out from an inch-perfect cross that was dipping in.
Surkumar attempted quite a few long ranger shots today, the most significant one was in the 72nd minute when his left footed shot beat Naseem but clipped the crossbar and went out.
Sangram made a good clearance in 75th minute. Edu, who perhaps was the best player for Mohammedan, sent in a low cross from right for Gautam Thakur. Sangram made a timely clearance to prevent Gautam from scoring.
Coach Karim made the first change in 78th minute, bringing on Tomba in place of James. Within 2 minutes, Chiddi took a shot from Tomba's pass that went over cross bar. In the next minute, getting a pass from Sueoka, Tomba sent another cross which Barreto leaped up to head the ball, but unluckily it missed the target by a whisker.
Mohun Bagan had a very lucky escape in 84th minute when from a Mohammedan corner, Sangram fisted the ball but it hit post and went out.
Ishfaq came in place of Snehasish in 86th minute. In 90th minute, Ishfaq got a ball in left flank, tried to hold the ball near the corner flag as a time wasting tactics, but the ball went out hitting his leg. From throw taken by opponents, Ishfaq nicely snatched the ball, Chiddi took the ball from him, entered the box from left flank and unselfishly gave a pass to Barreto. The Brazilian got the ball facing his own goal with his marker behind him, but then took a sudden turn and flicked the ball inside goal past Nasim. An absolutely stunning goal from the all time best foreign player to have played in Indian soil.
Soon after, Micky came in place of Barreto.
How can a Mohun Bagan match end without Chiddi's name not in the scoring list! He put the last nail in Mohammedan's coffin when receiving a pass from Ishfaq, he took a nice swerving right footed shot that went to the back of the net making the scoreline 4-1 in favor of Mohun Bagan.
After match, coach Karim said, "I am very happy with the way team performed today. Barreto, Chiddi, Sueoka all have their names in the scoresheet, this is also a very positive sign for us. In 2nd half, there was a bit pressure from the opponents, but we played well and scored 2 more goals. We have to continue with this good performance in the coming matches."
Barreto who scored his 200th goal today dedicated both the goals to the supporters.
Mohun Bagan will play their next match against Chirag United on 23rd December. Today in the other match of the group, Mahindra United beat Chirag 2-1.
