INJURY TO TWO KEY PLAYERS RESULT IN MARINERS GOING OUT OF FED CUP
Kolkata ,
31-Dec, 2009 : Mohun Bagan lost 0-2 to East Bengal today in Federation Cup Semi Final. Mohun Bagan last lost to Mumbai FC in I league, after that they were unbeaten in 10 consecutive matches.
Jose Barreto missed a penalty in first half and Mariners received a huge blow when the pillar of the defence, Dipak Mandal became injured and had to be replaced. Later in 2nd half, Rakesh Masih also was replaced after he received injury.
Today Mohun Bagan played good football in first half and came close to scoring few times. In 4th minute, from Alvito's free kick, Nirmal's header was going towards goal, but Sangram made a good save by fisting the ball out.
Mohun Bagan made quite a few good moves down the right flank. In 8th minute, James and Sueoka combined well in the right flank but from James cross, Abhra fumbled but collected the ball on 2nd attempt. In the next minute, Azim got booked for foul on Sonju, referee was a little harsh in this case. If this was a grave offense, then Mehtab would have got quite a few red cards in the match.
In 20th minute, from Chiddi's brilliant long pass, Barreto crossed from right side, Sueoka took a diving head but Abhra made a good save from goalline, a very good attempt indeed by the Japanese.
Within 2 minutes, the three combined well again. After Barreto and Chiddi played a wall pass amongst each other, the final pass went to Sueoka, but he chose to cross the ball and the chance went begging, instead he could have attempted a shot at the goal as he was in a scoring position.
In 30th minute, Mohun Bagan received a big blow when Dipak Mandal was injured and had to be replaced, Mandi came in his place.
In 32nd minute, Mohun Bagan got a penalty when Ishfaq was pulled down by Nabi. While Barreto was about to take the penalty, Abhra was already out of line and by the time Barreto took the shot, Abhra was 3 steps forward from the goalline. Barreto's shot went out, but referee should have allowed Barreto to take the penalty again.
Mehtab got yellow card around 36th minute, he could have easily got red card as he continuously fouled Sueoka throughout the 1st half.
In injury time of the half, Soumik hit James off the ball and was shown yellow card.
Another injury in 2nd half changed the complexion of the game. After Dipak, this time it was Masih who got injured and Micky came in his place in 51st minute.
In 53rd minute, from Sueoka's free kick, Barreto headed the ball which narrowly missed target. Okpara played well in defence for East Bengal and did not give much space to Chiddi or Barreto to take a shot in the 2nd half.
In 54th minute, Mehtab continued with his foul on Sueoka and again pushed him in front of penalty box. Micky took the shot but it lacked direction.
East Bengal scored the first goal from defensive lapse in 59th minute. Subhash Singh's corner went to completely unmarked Yakubu, he pushed the ball inside empty goal.
Micky was shown yellow card in 60th minute when he needlessly committed a foul. He did not play good football today and had to be replaced by Souvik in 73rd minute. Souvik tried a lot and took 2 good shots from outside the box, one of them was brilliantly saved by Abhra.
Mohun Bagan went all out for attack in the last 10 mnutes and from counter attack from Baichung's pass, Mehtab scored the 2nd goal for East Bengal when his shot beat Sangram and went to the back of the net.
Injury to two key players during the match caused problem for Mohun Bagan coach. When Rakesh Masih got injured, he had two options either to bring Souvik or Micky. He chose for the experienced player, but Micky's off form meant that he had to replace him with Souvik. Due to this, he could not bring in either Tomba or Suraj Mandal as replacement in 2nd half.
Mohun Bagan will next play against Churchill Brothers on 8th January in an I league match in Salt Lake Stadium.
Karim said "The penalty miss was one of the three reasons which led to our downfall. The loss of Dipak and Rakesh through injury affected us severely as well." He also said, "Why should I blame Barreto? We played as a team and lost as a team."
Barreto said, "It happens in football. Sometimes you score goals out of nowhere and sometimes you miss a sitter."
