MOHUN BAGAN VS CHURCHILL MATCH ENDS IN 2-2 DRAW

08-Jan, 2010 : Mohun Bagan drew with Churchill Brothers 2-2 at Barasat Stadium today. Barreto scored both the goals for Mariners.
Mohun Bagan coach made one tactical change in the starting lineup today as he switched position of Sueoka to right half, putting Rakesh along with Marcos in central midfield. This worked wonders for Mariners as Mohun Bagan dominated the match and created a number of chances throughout the match, but unfortunately again they were denied a clear penalty at the fag end of the match.
After match, Karim said, "Churchill players had quite a few players in their upfront who are good players, and to stop them I put Rakesh in front of Azim and Mandi. Actually Sueoka is a kind of player who prefers to attack more and also Rakesh would be able to match more with their big bodied midfielders."
Special mention should be made of Mandi, Azim, Biswajit and Surkumar, the defence line for today's match who fought valiantly and hardly gave any room to Odafe. It should be noted that Mohun Bagan today did not have Dipak, Manju and Mohanraj, the three national team players in their defence. Mohun Bagan conceded both the goals from set-piece movements. This is certainly a little concern for Mohun Bagan coach as though team is playing well, but sometimes they are conceding soft goals from setpiece situations. Karim said, "Defence really played well today. We were playing against one of the most consistent attacking lineup of I league and the way my defenders played today, really has made me proud of them. The only thing of concern is the goals that we are conceding from setpiece movements. May be it was a little bit of lack of concentration." Mandi especially was brilliant as there were quite a few times when he stopped Odafe with his well-timed tackle.
Marcos was the pillar of midfield today. He operated like a machine for 90 minutes, playing box to box. He made quite a few darting down the middle runs which resulted in good moves for Mariners. He also did his snatching and blocking in midfield, especially from Kalu, to perfection. Today's performance of Marcos reminded us of last year's Federation Cup final match against Dempo where he completely neutralized Beto.
Masih also played quite well though some times he was a little soft and made few mistakes. We should also not forget that this is only his 2nd year in I league and he will surely mature with age and experience.
In the flanks, Ishfaq was outstanding today. He continued with his good performance from Federation Cup. He made many runs down the flank and earned a number of corners for Mohun Bagan today. Sueoka adjusted nicely to his new position and he also combined well with Barreto and Chiddi.
Barreto was criticized after missing penalty against East Bengal in Federation Cup, but today when Mariners got the spotkick, he like a true leader himself took the shot with perfection. He very well knew that if he missed today, he will be blasted by a section by media and supporters. Though Chiddi missed a few chances today, but he paved the way for few good movements during the match, and from his pass Mohun Bagan earned the penalty.
Churchill made the first attack of the match in 2nd minute when from Naoba's corner, Odafe headed the ball over crossbar. Mariners came back strongly and within minutes, Marcos and Chiddi attempted two long ranger shots that went out of target. In 8th minute, from Ishfaq's cross, Barreto missed an easy chance when his side volley from close range went over the woodwork.
Churchill went ahead in 9th minute. From Dan Ito's free kick, Sangram came charging out to get the ball, but Odafe jumped before him to head the ball inside empty goal. It was a little error of judgment from Sangram.
Mohun Bagan got a number of corners in the first half and Chiddi came close to scoring few times, but Gourmangi was alert and averted danger. In 23rd minute, from one such corner of Marcos, Chiddi nicely leaped up to head the ball, but mistimed the header.
Ultimately Mariners equalized in 35th minute from corner. Sueoka took a short corner giving the ball to Marcos from whose cross, Barreto brilliantly headed back the ball past Arindam inside goal.
Just after the goal, Ishfaq made another good run but his pass meant for Chiddi inside box was a little too long for the Nigerian. At the stroke of half time, Chiddi missed the easiest chance of the match. Marcos snatched the ball from Kulu near Mariners' penalty box and from there he made a run, dribbling past 2 players, and gave a pass to unmarked Chiddi inside penalty box, and Chiddi had only goalkeeper to beat. He tried to lob the ball over Arindam's head, but the ball just went out of target.
Churchill also made few good moves and earned few corners, but Sangram and defence played well and did not allow Odafa any clear look at the goal.
After the change of ends, Mohun Bagan was awarded a penalty in 49th minute. Getting a pass from Marcos, Chiddi took his time and making a sharp turn, gave a through pass to Sueoka who was entering the box from right side. As Sueoka tried to dribble past Arindam, he was brought down by the goalkeeper and referee rightly awarded a spotkick, but unfortunately it was a sure red card offence and referee did not flash any cards to Arindam. Barreto scored from the penalty by placing the ball to the right of the goalkeeper.
In 52nd minute, Chiddi made a very good run down left side and his cross was deflected for a corner, though Arindam had no problem to fist the ball out from corner.
Ishfaq was shown yellow card in 60th minute for foul on Naoba.
Surkumar made a diagonal run in 62nd minute and took a left footed shot that went straight to Arindam. In 68th minute, from free kick, Sangram failed to collect the ball properly, ball landed in front of Dan Ito whose shot went ballooning over bar.
Masih initiated another good move when from his long pass, Barreto trapped the ball nicely and sent in a low cross for Chiddi but the ball was a little out of reach for Chiddi.
Odafe equalized in 70th minute from direct free kick.
Just after the goal, Barreto got a pass from Ishfaq in left flank, he made a run, beating Gourmangi and then took a right footed shot from outside the box that beat Arindam but narrowly went outside. It was a great attempt from the Brazilian.
Mohun Bagan made their first change in 75th minute when Tomba replaced Sueoka. Within minutes, Mariners were denied a clear penalty. Latching on to a long pass from Surkumar, Barreto crossed the ball from left side to Chiddi, who chest trapped the ball and as he tried to take the shot, he was pushed from behind by Dhanachandra, but referee completely ignored the incident.
Regarding refereeing, after match Karim said, "I don't want to make any comment regarding referee."
In 85th minute, James came in place of Ishfaq. In the next minute, James from left side gave the ball to Barreto, whose sent in a long ball for Tomba in right flank, but from Tomba's cross, Chiddi's head went over the crossbar.
Mohun Bagan would consider themselves unlucky having lost 2 points in a match where they enjoyed supremacy for better part of the game.
Odafa was awarded Man of the Match today. This was a very surprising decision as Marcos or Barreto should have got the award, as Mohun Bagan dominated today's match and Churchill hardly got any chance throughout the match, and Odafe was completely bottled up by Mohun Bagan defence, especially Mandi.
After the match, there were some stones thrown from gallery, one of which hit Kalu. Retaliating to this after match, in a most shocking manner, Arindam went running from his dressing room to the gallery and hit one spectator.
Mohun Bagan will next play their away match against Air India on January 17th. Tomorrow's practice session is at 10.30 a.m. with Sunday being off.
