MARINERS THUMP AIR INDIA 5-0 IN AN AWAY MATCH IN MUMBAI

Kolkata , 17-Jan, 2010 : Mohun Bagan beat Air India 5-0 in an away match in I league held in Cooperage Stadium, Mumbai. Barreto scored 4 goals while Kuluthungan netted the other one.

Mohun Bagan today did not have many key players in their squad like Chiddi, Dipak, Manju, Rakesh, Sangram, Manish, Snehasish, Mohanraj. Karim Bencharifa, coach of Mohun Bagan did not panic before match and he was positive and said yesterday, "I have my reserve bench ready, I am not thinking of who is not there, the players who will play are ready to give their best for Mohun Bagan." How right he was, as Mariners completely outplayed Air India 5-0.

Few days back when Barreto missed penalty in Federation Cup semi final, he was criticized by a section of supporters and media who questioned his goal scoring ability. Barreto, the all time best foreign player to have played in Indian soil, has proved everyone wrong once again and scored 4 goals today, this is his 6th goal in 2 matches. Incidentally, 10 years back, Barreto scored his first goal for Mohun Bagan on this very date, 17th January.

Karim had to make quite a few changes in the starting lineup as he paired Sueoka and Barreto upfront in absence of Chiddi with James and Ishfaq as the two side half. Kuluthungan played along with Marcos in central midfield. This was also a great decision as Kuluthungan had quite a good match today, much better compared to his performance at the start of the season. Like last match, Marcos had a very good match and his two brilliantly taken corners were converted into goals by Barreto. The young defensive lineup of Mohun Bagan including Mandi, Azim and Biswajit, whom Karim had prepared nicely in the absence of 3 national team players Manju, Dipak and Mohanraj, delivered another good performance today.

Shilton also was in splendid form today. We should not forget that the young goalkeeper conceded few soft goals at the start of I league, but coach Karim had full faith in his ability and did not drop him from the first team. We should really thank coach for supporting Shilton and helped him to get his form back.

At the start of the match, Air India got two throw with Uttam Singh taking long throws, but defence was alert to clear the ball.

Mohun Bagan got the first corner in 4th minute when from Kuluthungan's long pass, Sueoka's shot deflected for corner. From short corner, Marcos swerved the ball towards goal but Arnab fisted the ball out. In the next minute, from James' long throw, Ishfaq flicked the ball but the ball went straight across the face of the goal.

From another corner in 7th minute, Ishfaq's head went out. Ishfaq who continued with his good form today made a darting run to enter the box in 12th minute and took a prompt shot but the ball was deflected away for corner, but referee could not spot the deflection and wrongly gave goalkick in favour of Air India.

In 16th minute, from James cross, Sueoka attempted a backvolley but could not connect the ball properly. In the next minute, during a midfield action, Tapan pushed Ishfaq from behind to stop his run which was a definite yellow card offense, but referee decided otherwise.

Mohun Bagan came close to scoring in 22nd minute when Marcos' corner swerved nicely and hit post, it went to Kulu who sent in a cross from right side but no Mohun Bagan player was there to convert the chance.

In 25th minute, Surkumar took a direct free kick, in Roberto Carlos style, that was dipping at the last moment, but Arnab made a good save by fisting the ball.

Air India made their first positive move in 29th minute. Kailash crossed the ball from right side towards Opara, but Shilton came charging out and made a timely punch flying to his right before Opara could get his head to the ball.

For the last 15 minutes of the half, it was an one sided affair with Mohun Bagan building up pressure. In 34th minute, from Marcos free kick, Barreto headed the ball towards Sueoka who gave a back pass towards James, but as the latter tried to take a shot, an Air India defender made a timely save, but in the process James was badly injured and had to be replaced by Tomba in 38th minute.

Just before this change took place, Ishfaq was again in the thick of action when his cross from left side beat Arnab but unluckily for Mariners just went over cross bar.

In 40th minute, Ishfaq snatched the ball nicely in midfield and made a run towards Air India goal and from just outside the box gave a through pass towards Kuluthungan who was fraction of a second late to react and Arnab made no mistake to collect the ball.

Mohun Bagan scored the first goal in injury time of the first half. Ishfaq was brought down as he was dribbling past one player inside box and referee this time did not make any mistake and awarded a penalty. Barreto, cool as a cucumber, foxed Arnab to convert the spotkick.

After the change of ends, Mohun Bagan scored the remaining 4 goals in 23 minutes.

Mohun Bagan went 2-0 up in 47th minute. This also came from a setpiece movement. From Marcos corner, Ishfaq headed the ball towards goal, Arnab made a good save as he pushed the ball out from goalline, but Barreto made no mistake as he blasted the ball inside goal.

In 53rd minute, Air India missed a golden opportunity to score. First Shilton dived to his right to prevent a Opara header from going in, but then from a cross, Harpreet headed the ball over crossbar from very close range.

In 56th minute, Tomba-Sueoka-Surkumar combined well in right flank but Air India defence cleared the ball.

Sueko magic paved the way for 3rd goal in 58th minute as he made a run down the right flank, cut in, entered box, dribbled past one player and gave a delightful back pass towards Kuluthungan who did not waste any time and took a powerful shot to make the scoreline 3-0.

Barreto completed his hattrick in 62nd minute. It again came from a corner of Marcos, and Ishfaq also was involved in this goal when his shot went to Barreto who brilliantly headed the ball to back of the net. Ishfaq today was involved in the 3 goals that Mohun Bagan scored.

Barreto scored his 4th and team's 5th goal in 68th minute. This was perhaps the best goal of the match. Azim gave a through pass towards Barreto who started his run in perfect time, avoiding offside trap, and then ran about 30 yards with the ball, but his first shot was saved by Arnab. He got the ball again, this time in quite an acute angle with 2 defenders of Air India with him, but it was a stunning display of ball control from him as as he pushed the ball inside goal from almost 0 degree angle.

Karim made two changes in last 10 minutes of the match bringing on Branco and Santa Kumar in place of Barreto and Ishfaq.

In 88th minute, after making a good run in left flank, Santa delivered a good cross towards Branco but he could not control the ball properly thus wasting a chance. In the fag end of the match, Mandi made a goal line save.

After the match, Barreto said, "I am happy that my scoring 4 goals helped Mohun Bagan to win. I am very satisfied with the team's performance. It is really difficult to play in Mumbai, but we played against all odds and got 3 points. Today is a sad day for Bengal because Jyoti Basu passed away, but I hope this win brings smile to the face of people of Bengal. I would like to thank my family and people who gave me and my team good support and, last but not the least, to the almighty God."

Tomorrow, Mohun Bagan will have light practice session in hotel itself followed by practice in Cooperage at 3.30 p.m. on the 19th.
