MOHUN BAGAN LOST TO SALGAOKAR IN AN AWAY MATCH IN GOA
Kolkata ,
28-Jan, 2010 : Mohun Bagan today lost to Salgaokar by 2-1 in an away match in Goa. Sueoka scored the only goal for Mariners.
After 2 brilliant wins in Mumbai, today was a bad day at the office for Mohun Bagan. Salgaokar dominated the proceedings in the first half and came close to scoring a few times. Mohun Bagan came back strongly after the break, but missed few easy chances.
Mohun Bagan did not get service of Surkumar and Azim in this match due to suspension and viral fever respesctively. Manju played his first match today for Mohun Bagan this year after recovering from injury, but he was a little shaky today in defence and his combination with Mandi did not work well for Mariners, though Mandi made quite a few good tackles. Biswajit and Zenith were also bit shaky in first half.
Credit goes to Barreto and Sueoka who tried a lot but could not score the equalizing goal. Barreto was heavily marked throughout the match but still he provided few good balls for his co-players.
In first half, Salgaokar controlled the game, build some good moves and came close to scoring twice. Within 3 minutes of the start of play, they earned 2 corners.
Mohun Bagan got a free kick in 4th minute, but James shot sailed over crossbar. In 7th minute, Barreto gave a nice through pass for Ishfaq, he tried to cut in and the ball was cleared for corner.
In 12th minute, there was a lucky escape for Mohun Bagan goal, as Keita went past Biswajit and Manju and put the shot over from very close range.
From counter attack, James passed the ball to Zenith from whose well measured cross, Sueoka headed the ball in to give Mohun Bagan the lead in 13th minute.
Salgaokar kept their pressure on and in the 28th minute, Biswajit brilliantly headed the ball, falling backwards, out for corner.
In 32nd minute, Barreto was fouled outside the box, Marcos took the direct free kick and got a little dip, but not enough to bother Kalyan Chowbe.
In 35th minute, getting a pass from Marcos, Kulu took a snap shot that deflected out for corner.
The best move of the half from Mohun Bagan's point of view came in the 43rd minute. Marcos and Sueoka played a wall pass with each other near the halfline and passed the ball to Barreto, who flicked the ball towards Ishfaq in left flank. Ishfaq ran a few paces and delivered a cross which Barreto leaped up to head the ball, but could not connect the ball properly.
Salgaokar equalized in 44th minute. Milagres sent in a pass from midfield, Keita nicely chest trapped the ball and further pushed the ball forward by his head, and then unleashed a grounder from outside the box that went to back of the net.
In injury time, a slight defensive error by Mandi resulted in an Ikenwa effort narrowly missing target. Other than this mistake, Mandi played really well and was the best player in defence today.
Just after half time, Salgaokar went ahead in 47th minute. Keita passed the ball from right flank, Manju could have done better, but Ikenwa did not make any mistake to score the goal.
Mohun Bagan came back strongly after conceding this goal. In 53rd minute, Ishfaq made a run down left flank and from his cross, Barreto took a flying head, diving forward, but unluckly for Mohun Bagan, the ball hit a defender's leg.
In 56th minute, Barreto dribbled past 3 players outside the box but his cross was cleared by Salgaokar defence before Sueoka could head the ball.
Coach Karim made his first change in the 66th minute bringing Snehasish in place of Ishfaq. In the next minute, Keita got a pass from midfield, hardly got any resistance from Manju and blasted a shot, that Shilton made a stunning save diving to his right.
This mistake prompted coach Karim to make a change as he brought in Rakesh in place of Manju in 71st minute.
In the next minute, Mohun Bagan made a good positive move that started when Zenith snatched the ball nicely from Keita near his own box, and passed the ball to James, who made a stupendous run down the right flank, played a wall pass with Barreto, and from near the corner flag delivered a cross that was a little high for Snehasish.
Marcos took a direct free kick in 73rd minute, there was a little fumble by Salgaokar goalkeeper Kalyan, but he managed to catch the ball in 2nd attempt before Sueoka could latch on to the ball.
In 74th minute, from James corner, Rakesh missed a very easy chance to score, as his head went over crossbar with goalkeeper completely out of position.
Karim made the last change in 78th minute as he brought in Tomba in place of Biswajit. He changed the formation to 4-3-3 from 4-4-2 and this put more pressure on Salgaokar.
In 81st minute, Sueoka got a loose ball, but he was in two minds whether to take a shot or cross the ball, and ultimately his cross was cleared by defence. In 86th minute, from Marcos' cross, Sueoka did everything right by jumping up to meet the ball, but could not keep his head down as the ball soared over crossbar. In injury time, from Snehasish's cross, Marcos header went out.
After the match, Karim said, "We could not play to our potential, especially in the first half where we made few mistakes. There were a few defensive lapses which costs us the match. Adding to all the injuries, we did not get the service of Surkumar and Azim today. Zenith and Manju needed time to settle down. We tried our best and in 2nd half came close to scoring few times but unfortunately those were not converted. Overall, it was a disappointing performance from us."
Mohun Bagan will play their next match against Dempo on 2nd February in Goa.
