MOHUN BAGAN - RAILWAY FC ENCOUNTER ENDS IN 2-2 DRAW; SATYAJIT RESIGNS; PRESS CONF TOMORROW AT 4 PM

Kolkata , 30-Mar, 2010 :

Mohun Bagan continued their poor performance as they were hold by Railway FC to a 2-2 draw in a Kolkata Premier League match. Mohun Bagan now are still in the top of the league table with 32 points from 11 matches and are 8 points ahead of Chirag United, though Mariners have played 2 matches more than Chirag. Mohun Bagan's next match is against Chirag United, probable date of this match is April 5th, though final decision has not yet been taken by IFA.

Coach Satyajit Chatterjee today fielded a team which saw as many as 7 changes in the starting lineup compared to the last match against Lajong FC. Shilton was back in goalkeeping position. In defence, Zenith and Mohanraj played as the two side backs while Dipak and Mandi were in charge of the central defence. Mohanraj was back in the team after a long time.

In midfield, Snehasish played in left half while U-19 Souvik operated down the right flank. However, there was a surprise selection in the central midfield with Lalramluaha and Kulothungan being included in the first team. Manish and Souvik could have been used there, as there were lot of options in the flanks to choose from like Tomba, James and Ishfaq. Barreto paired with Sueoka in forward.

In 2nd minute of the match, Palash Karmakar took a powerful long ranger shot for Railway FC which just went over crossbar. Mohun Bagan retaliated nicely and in the next minute, Sueoka made a run down the left flank and from his cross, Barreto's head went inches over the bar.

Mohun Bagan got two free kicks near the right flank, both times Snehasish' shot could not cause any problem for goalkeeper. In the 10th minute, getting a through pass from Barreto, Sueoka missed a golden chance to score as he found himself in a 1:1 situation with goalkeeper Sudipta Banerjee, but the latter made a good save and did not allow the Japanese to take a shot.

Against run of play, from Swarnabha's cross, Dinesh put Railway FC ahead by brilliantly flicking the ball inside goal past Shilton who was stranded in the goalline.

Minutes after conceding the goal, Sueoka took two back to back shots at the goal from close range, but both times goalkeeper was equal to the task and cleared the ball.

In the 19th minute, from Snehasish's free kick, Sueoka's head could not trouble the goalkeeper.

Mohun Bagan equalized in the 23rd minute when Barreto converted a spot kick. Zenith delivered a cross from the right side, Sueoka tried to head the ball but was brought down by Railway FC defence. Though Barreto had missed a penalty few days back but, cool as a cucumber, he converted the penalty by placing the ball to the right of the goalkeeper.

Ramluah was in poor form today and was substituted in the 27th minute by Tomba Singh. Tomba went to the right flank while Souvik moved to central midfield. This was a good decision as we feel that Souvik is definitely a better player when he operates from central medio rather than the flanks, though overall Souvik was far from his usual good form today.

In the 29th minute, Mohanraj took a free kick from outside the box which took a deflection off the wall, changed direction and almost went into goal.

Barreto tried a lot but did not get good support from midfield. He made a solo effort as he got the ball in left flank, dribbled past 2 players but could not get past the last man in the defence.

Overall, performance of Mariners in the first half was far from satisfactory.

After the change of ends, they looked much positive and from Mohanraj's cross, Barreto nicely headed the ball which goalkeeper made a good save.

Mariners kept pressing and from a mistake made by Railway FC stopper Sundar Mandi, brother of Sagram Mandi, Souvik got a loose ball in the right side of the box, but he delayed to pass the ball, and ball was cleared out for corner. From Snehasish's corner, Sagram's head went over the crossbar.

Satyajit made the 2nd change when he brought in Ishfaq in place of Snehasish in the 56th minute.

Railway FC earned a penalty in the 59th minute. The ball hit Zenith's hand inside penalty box and referee did not hesitate to give a penalty. Palash took the shot and Shilton made a superb save diving to his right, but Mohun Bagan defenders were very slow to react and Swarnabha chipped the ball, it ricocheted off the far post and went to the back of the net.

This goal came as a shock to Mohun Bagan and they almost equalized in the next attack itself when Tomba's shot narrowly missed the target as it unluckily deflected off a defender's leg.

Suraj was brought in place of Kulu in the 65th minute. Suraj went to forward while Sueoka was pushed back to the position of attacking medio.

Few moments later, Ishfaq delivered a nice cross, Sueoka tried to head the ball, but could not reach the ball, return ball went to Barreto whose first time shot again took a deflection and went out for corner.

Sueoka made the scoreline 2-2 in the 71st minute. From Tomba's corner, Barreto headed the ball towards Sueoka, whose flick again took a deflection but this time the ball went inside goal.

Ishfaq almost earned a penalty in the 73rd minute when it seemed that he was brought down inside the box, but referee ignored the incident.

Sagram again was in the right position during a corner taken by Souvik, but his head again missed the target. In the 80th minute, from Mohanraj's long throw, Barreto's diving header was brilliantly saved by Railway FC goalkeeper diving to his right.

At the fag end of the match, Barreto got two very easy chance to score, but both times he tried to scoop the ball over goalkeeper's head into the goal but failed to do so. The first time, ball went ballooning over crossbar and the next time it went straight to goalkeeper's hand. Barreto himself could not believe that he has missed those chances. He said after match, "I have scored many goals in my career and missed many, but today's miss was very costly as we could not win the match. I think we are passing through a bad time. Once we start winning, situation will normalize."

The match eventually ended in a 2-2 draw. Railway FC goalkeeper, Sudipta was rightly adjudged Man of the Match.

After the match, while talking to the press, Satyajit said, "I have resigned from the job of Mohun Bagan coach. I feel luck was not in my side and I could not deliver the result. I take all the moral responsibility for these negative results. Apart from being a professional coach, I also have some emotional attachment with Mohun Bagan club. When I see tear in the supporter's eyes, I feel it is due to me and so I want to resign."

When asked if he had got support from all during his tenure, he said, "Of course, there has been absolutely no problem in the team. I have got 100% support from all the players and officials and everybody involved with the football team. Nobody has tried to harm the integrity of the team. I really don't know why things did not work out properly. I feel a new person can deliver better result than me, so I have resigned. The officials have asked me repeatedly to consider my decision, but I want to stick to my decision."

Tomorrow there will be a press conference held in Mohun Bagan club from 4 pm regarding the present affairs of McDowell Mohun Bagan Football Team.
