ANOTHER DISAPPOINTING PERFORMANCE BY MARINERS AS THE MATCH AGAINST SALGAOKAR ENDS IN A STALEMATE 1-1

Kolkata , 10-Apr, 2010 : Mohun Bagan lost 2 points today against Salgaokar in an I league match held in Salt Lake Stadium as the match ended 1-1. Chidi scored the only goal for Mariners.

In today's match, Micky started with Marcos as the two central midfielders with Sueoka and Ishfaq operating down the flanks. The defence lineup consisted of Rakesh and Manju as the two stoppers while Surkumar and Biswajit played as the two side backs. Barreto paired with Chidi in forward line. Chidi's inclusion came as a surprise as he was almost ruled out of today's match due to injury. Perhaps, Chidi badly wanted to play this match and score goals as there were some baseless allegation made by a section of media that he and few of the players are underperforming due to close relationship with ex coach Karim Bencharifa, which is absolutely nonsense. We know that few players of the present team has good relation with ex coach Carlos. Does that mean, whenever Mohun Bagan meet Churchill, those players don't perform?

Coming back to today's match, Mohun Bagan could have scored from the first move of the match. Barreto set up a good move, the ball went to Ishfaq via Chidi, but Ishfaq could not control the ball properly inside the penalty box and his cross went out. 2 minutes later, Barreto nicely released the ball for Marcos, but defence cleared the ball.

Manju was outstanding today in defence and made at least 3-4 great tackles to avert danger, as the last man of defence. Of note, he disappointed with his performance against Lajong when he played in left back position. Keita twice got the ball in dangerous position within first 10 minutes, but both times Manju was equal to the task as he made good interception.

Mohun Bagan got quite a few corners and free kicks today and almost 90% of those were taken by Marcos. Though he definitely took few good setpiece movements, but it would be better if, as a variation, someone else also takes the setpiece movements, as otherwise it becomes predictable. In the 10th minute, Marcos' free kick went over the target.

In 14th time, Sueoka-Chidi combined well but the final pass was a little fast for Barreto, and Kalyan brilliantly came out of charge to clear the ball.

Rakesh was shown yellow card in the 16th minute and he will miss the next match.

Mohun Bagan continued getting corners and in the 25th minute, Surkumar's head from Marcos' corner went over the bar. Few minutes later, Surkumar came close to scoring from Marcos' pass, but Kalyan again made a good save.

Micky sent a long ball towards Ishfaq, who made a good run, but Salgaokar defence was alert and cleared the ball.

Just at the stroke of half time from Marcos' swerving corner, Masih's well timed header unfortunately hit post and came to Chidi, but before he could take a shot, Kalyan made a good interception.

In injury time of the first half, Manju made another good clearance from a corner that Salgaokar got.

Salgaokar played cautious football in 1st half and so Mohun Bagan found it difficult to penetrate into opponent box, though they got few half chances and one effort hit post, but in 2nd half Mariners played much better football.

Marcos took another free kick in the 50th minute and Kalyan yet again nicely fisted the ball out of danger.

Surkumar was badly fouled in the 52nd minute and he went out injured, Mohanraj replaced him and went to left back, while Biswajit switched flanks to right back. Biswajit was a bit shaky in the first half but played well in the latter half though he was shown yellow card in the 56th minute as he commited a foul on Keita.

Mariners brought in Manish in place of Micky in the 59th minute. Though Micky tried a lot and did a lot of running and sent few good long balls, but overall his performance was far from satisfactory. He had quite a few good I league seasons in the past, but this year somehow he is not being to able to perform up to his standard.

Chidi scored the first goal of the match in 62nd minute, when from Marcos corner, he made a timely jump to connect the ball before Kalyan and put the ball inside empty goal.

In the 70th minute, Salgaokar goalkeeper, Kalyan made another stunning save. From Ishfaq's cross, Barreto made a good head and the ball was going inside goal, when Kalyan came flying to save the ball with his outstretched right hand. Mohun Bagan had a very good spell and looked extremely dangerous for the next 10 minutes. Barreto made a good run and his cross from left side was going towards two unmarked players, but Kalyan fisted the ball out for corner.

Against run of play, in the 77th minute, Keita equalized for Salgaokar. Lamare sent a through pass and evading the offside trap, Keita made a good run and placed the ball inside goal past Sangram.

In the next minute itself, Francis' shot from very close range went out, it was a lucky escape for Mohun Bagan.

Mohanraj made an error of judgment and allowed an opponent player to take a shot but luckily it went out, though Mohanraj made one great timely tackle to avert danger.

Chidi who played his heart out today missed a very easy chance in the 81st minute. He nicely chest trapped a ball, went past his marker and found open space in front of him in the penalty box. With only goalkeeper to beat, his hurriedly-taken shot went ballooning over the crossbar.

Mohun Bagan got a penalty in the 82nd minute. Kalyan missed the flight while trying to catch Mohanraj's long throw, Chidi trapped the ball and when he was about to score, Kalyan brought him down. Barreto took a low shot from the penalty and Kalyan dived to his right to make another brilliant save. Though Barreto this year has scored 6 goals from spot kick, this was his 4th miss as well from the same.

In the 84th minute, Biswajit Bhattacharya made the last change bringing on Snehasish in place of Sueoka. Ishfaq went to right flank while Snehasish operated down the left side.

Kalyan who was rightly adjudged Man of the Match today yet again made a good save as he prevented Barreto from scoring in the 86th minute. This was the last positive chance that Mohun Bagan got and the match ended in 1-1 stalemate.

Talking to press after the match, coach Biswajit said, "We missed a lot of chances today. We played better in 2nd half but missed a penalty which proved very costly in the end." Regarding Barreto taking the penalty, coach said, "Anybody can miss penalty. Even great players like Zico, Platini, Beckham, Socrates has missed penalty. We definitely have prepared other players for taking penalty, but they could have missed also. This can happen in football. Barreto has converted many spot kicks this year also, but since he has missed few, we might assign other players to take the penalty from next time."

Mohun Bagan will play their next match against Air India on April 17th, the match will be held in Salt Lake Stadium.
