ANOTHER DISAPPOINTING LOSS FOR MOHUN BAGAN
Kolkata ,
28-Apr, 2010 : Mohun Bagan lost 4-1 against Dempo in an I league match held in Salt Lake Stadium.
Mohun Bagan played brilliant football in first half and it reminded us of the Federation Cup 2008-09 final match against the same opponent which Mariners won 1-0 to lift the trophy. In the first half, Mohun Bagan got many chances and came close to scoring quite a few times, but Abhijit Mandal was alert and played really well to deny Mohun Bagan from scoring more goals.
Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 6th minute when from Marcos' corner, Manju brilliantly scored off a left footed side volley.
Barreto and Surkumar tried few long ranger shots but all of them went out of target. Sueoka missed a very easy chance in the 20th minute. Chidi's powerful shot was saved by Abhijit, the rebound ball came to Sueoka who just had to head the ball inside empty goal, but he could not head the ball properly and the ball went out.
Barreto gave a through pass to Ishfaq who made a darting run, cut in and his shot unfortunately hit the face of Abhijit and went out.
Dempo mainly relied on counter attack in first half and they played in 4-4-1-1 formation with Beto playing behind Ranty.
Ranty came close to scoring when he could not connect Abranches' cross. Shilton was a little shaky from start and he almost conceded a goal when he could not grip properly a shot taken by Beto, and the ball bounced out of his hand and just went over crossbar.
In the 33rd minute, Sueoka and Surkumar made a great move down the right flank and the latter's cross meant for Chidi was brilliantly saved by diving Abhijit.
Mohun Bagan was unlucky not to get a penalty as a Dempo defender clearly handled the ball inside the box. Even Dempo coach admitted that it could have been a penalty.
Overall, the first half belonged to Mariners and they should have scored at least 3 goals.
However, things turned in the 2nd half. Armando went back to 4-4-2, putting Beto back in midfield and pushed Abranches up along with Ranty and this worked wonders for the visiting team and they scored 4 goals within 17 minutes. Mohun Bagan goalkeeper and defence succumbed under pressure and there was also very less blocking in midfield during this period.
Dempo equalized in the 47th minute when from Samir Naik's corner unmarked Beto headed the ball in. Beto was standing absolutely unmarked and scored the goal without any pressure from defence. Coach Biswajit said after match, "It was lack of concentration of the defenders that allowed Beto to score the first goal. I had asked the defenders to keep a close eye on the opponent players during setpiece movements."
In the 54th minute, Ranti made the scoreline 2-1 in favour of Dempo. Beto easily made a down the middle run with no resistance from central midfield, passed the ball to Ranty who dribbled past defence and unleashed a thunderous shot to score the goal. Shilton was standing half way out of the goalline. Also none of the defenders could prevent Ranty from taking the shot.
In the 60th minute, Abranches scored the 3rd goal for Dempo from a corner. It was due to a mistake by Biswajit Saha. When Abranches took the shot, Shilton was completely out of charge and Manju was standing in the goalline but the latter did not make any effort to stop the ball from going in, action replay showed he put his foot away from the ball.
Dempo scored the fourth goal in the 63rd minute. From Anthony's cross, Beto made no mistake to head the ball inside goal. Shilton this time did not come out of charge to save the ball, Surkumar also allowed Beto to take the head.
Biswajit said, "Shilton could have done better for the last two goals. In the first half also he was shaky, I cautioned him in half time, but we conceded all the four goals in such a quick succession that I did not get time to bring in Sangram."
Mohun Bagan made 3 changes in quick succession, bringing Snehasish, Sangram and James in place of Ishfaq, Shilton and Manish. Mohun Bagan put some pressure but could not beat Abhijit.
Seeing Abhijit out of position, Barreto tried two long ranger shots from midfield but did not succeed in scoring a goal.
The 2nd half performance of Mohun Bagan was pathetic and like Lajong match, today also they conceded 4 goals.
Mohun Bagan will next play their I league match against Churchill Brothers in Goa on May 7th.
