MARINERS HOLD BY VIVA KERALA IN AN AWAY MATCH OF I LEAGUE; MB BEAT LAJONG IN U-19 I LEAGUE

11-May, 2010 : Mohun Bagan today was hold by Viva Kerala to a 1-1 draw in an I league match held in Kerala.
Jose Barreto scored the only goal for Mariners. He was in very good form today and was adjudged Man of the Match.
Mariners made a good start and within 2 minutes earned a corner when Chidi's shot was fisted out by goalkeeper. However, Marcos' corner was cleared by Viva defence. Thereafter, Viva started controlling the game and Mohun Bagan looked very defensive, relying mainly on counter attack.
Viva got few half chances but Sangram and defence was alert. Sangram made a great save when he denied Karma from scoring in a 1:1 situation in the 20th minute. However, in the 22nd minute, Karma gave Viva the lead from Sabeeth's pass.
After conceding the early goal, Mariners came out of the shell and launched a series of attacks on Viva defence. Barreto gave two good passes to Chidi and Sueoka but their efforts, Chidi's shot and Sueoka's head just went out of target.
Captain Sangram played well today and made quite a few good saves today.
Just before lemon break, Santa Kumar's swerving corner beat goalkeeper but no Mohun Bagan player was there to pounce on the chance.
Biswajit made one very good tactical change after half time that changed the complexion of the game. He brought in Branco in place of Subho Kumar. Branco played with Chidi in forward, while Barreto went back to midfield with Marcos. This paid rich dividend as in the 50th minute, Barreto equalized for Mohun Bagan. From Chidi's pass, Sueoka sent a cross from right flank, Barreto headed the ball inside goal making the scoreline 1-1.
Barreto played good football in midfield and gave quite a few good passes to Branco and Chidi. Coach Biswajit brought in Snehasish in place of Santa Kumar in the 64th minute. This change could have been made earlier also, as Snehasish played well in the left half position.
Mohun Bagan came very close to scoring in the 70th minute. Barreto was fouled outside the penalty box. Marcos' freekick found Chidi's head but the ball narrowly missed the target.
Mohun Bagan made the last change bringing James Singh in place of Sueoka in the 71st minute.
Surkumar made few darting runs during the match and took few long ranger shots but nothing came out of those.
Mohun Bagan got a free kick in the 80th minute when Chidi was tripped from behind outside Viva penalty box. Snehasish nicely took a low free kick and the ball went straight across the face of the goal past Manju and Chidi. If either of them could have got a touch to the ball, it could have given Mariners 3 points.
Overall, the performance of Mariners was much better in 2nd half compared to before half time. Barreto looked in good touch today and we hope to see a repeat performance from him in the next match against East Bengal which will be held on the 16th of May in Salt Lake Stadium at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, in U-19 I league, Mohun Bagan started their campaign on a winning note beating Lajong FC by 3-0, T. Puia scored a brace while Dipendu Dowary netted the other. In another match of the group, East Bengal beat Chirag 5-0. Mohun Bagan will next play against Chirag United in U-19 I league on the 14th of May, the match will be played in Salt Lake Stadium at 3.45 p.m.
