GOALS FROM BARRETO AND SNEHASISH HELP MARINERS BEAT EAST BENGAL 2-1
Kolkata ,
16-May, 2010 : Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal 2-1 in an I league match held in Salt Lake Stadium. Barreto and Snehasish scored for Mohun Bagan.
In the 2009-10 season, Mohun Bagan played 4 times against East Bengal, won twice, lost once and one match ended in a draw. Mohun Bagan has won both the I league matches against their arch rivals 5-3 and 2-1 respectively.
Today Mohun Bagan dominated the proceedings for most part of the match and could have scored few more goals. Barreto and Sueoka was outstanding today. Other players also performed well.
Coach Biswajit made the right decision to put Rakesh Masih as defensive medio and he really played well, especially his snatching and blocking in midfield was first rate.
Dipak also lead the defence nicely and got good support from Azim. The defence which has conceded 9 goals in the last 3 matches, looked in much better shape today and played with confidence.
Though Azim and Marcos were shaky in the first quarter of the match, but slowly they gathered confidence and played exceptionally well thereafter. Chidi also did lot of running and his performance was noteworthy, though few times if he could have passed the ball in time to Sueoka, it could have paved way for more goals.
However, Sueoka and Barreto were undoubtedly the two best players for Mohun Bagan today.
Barreto continued with his good performance of the last match against Viva Kerala in which he was adjudged Man of the Match, but today it was Sueoka's turn to grab the award, as both the goals came from Sueoka's pass. East Bengal left back Soumik had absolutely no answer for Sueoka's running.
Okpara was given the job of manmarking Barreto. Not only was Opara total failure in his job, but he committed innumerable fouls on Barreto. However, Suresh showed him card just once. Other than scoring the goal, Barreto sent a number of good passes, and as a true team man, he also was seen coming back to assist the defence.
The first XI of Mohun Bagan in today's match comprised of Sangram, Surkumar, Dipak, Azim, Mohanraj, Sueoka, Marcos, Masih, Ishfaq, Barreto and Chidi.
In the 2nd minute, Ishfaq made a good run and from his cross, Barreto attempted a bicycle kick but collided with Okpara. Sueoka missed a very easy chance in the 12th minute. Barreto sent a delightful inswinging cross from the right side, Chidi leaped up to head the ball, his head was nicely saved by East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet, the rebound ball came to unmarked Sueoka who just had to push the ball inside empty goal, but his hurriedly taken shot went out.
However, Mohun Bagan scored within 2 minutes. Rakesh Masih sent a long pass towards Sueoka, who made a darting run, sent a pinpoint cross from right side towards Barreto who timed his jump to perfection to head the ball into the net. When Barreto headed the ball, he had two defenders marking him.
East Bengal got a chance to restore parity in the 16th minute. From Alvito's pass, Yakubu nicely dribbled past Azim and Dipak but from handshaking distance of Sangram, his push went out of the target.
In the 20th minute, Sangram made a very good save when he fisted out a free kick taken by Yakubu which was in target.
Sueoka made another good move and from his cross, Chidi's header went out. Ishfaq also attempted a long ranger shot but the ball went straight to Gurpreet.
Barreto-Chidi-Sueoka also made few good moves but nothing resulted from those and the half time score read 1-0 in favour of Mariners.
In 55th minute, Barreto gave a forward pass towards Chidi, Mehraj failed to clear the ball, Chidi was guilty in not following the ball and an easy chance went begging.
East Bengal tried to put pressure on Mohun Bagan goal by bringing on Sanju Pradhan and Baichung Bhutia, but Sangram and defence was alert and did not allow opponents any space inside Mohun Bagan box.
In the 67th minute, Snehasish replaced Ishfaq. This change worked wonders and Snehasish played really well today.
Mohun Bagan got a direct free kick just outside the East Bengal box for a foul on Chidi. From Marcos' pass, Barreto nicely evaded the offside trap but failed to trap the ball properly inside the box. However, he managed to sent a cross meant for Sueoka but Gurpreet had no problem to collect Sueoka's head. This was perhaps the only mistake made by Barreto during the match.
In the 76th minute, Surkumar made a stupendous diagonal run and from outside the box unleashed a shot that beat goalkeeper and hit the post.
Surkumar made a fantastic save when he made a timely interception to deflect Okpara's left footed shot for corner. In the 83rd minute, Sanju sent a cross from right, Sangram missed the flight and the ball hit the top of the upright and went out.
Chidi controlled the ball nicely, got past 1 player but his final pass meant for Sueoka was poor, which meant another chance went begging.
Mohun Bagan went 2-0 up in the 86th minute. From Sueoka's cross, Snehasish pushed the ball to the back of the net.
Today's performance from Mohun Bagan and Barreto again brought the familiar chanting "Barreto, Barreto" in Mohun Bagan gallery.
After conceding two goals, East Bengal supporters started throwing stones at the ground and the match had to be stopped for few minutes, even East Bengal coach appealed to match referee to stop the match just because their own supporters were throwing stones at them. This was indeed a very funny proposal from East Bengal coach.
After the match started, in the injury time Mohun Bagan made a mistake by not attacking and trying to keep the ball mainly within their half. They were only playing square passes amongst themselves which was a risky ploy, and eventually conceded one soft goal in injury time. Sonju got a loose ball and passed the ball to Yakubu who was completely unmarked and just tapped the ball inside empty goal. That was the last action of the match and Mohun Bagan beat arch rivals East Bengal 2-1.
Mohanraj, Marcos and Sangram was shown yellow card by referee Suresh in today's match.
Mohun Bagan will play their last I league match against Mumbai FC in Mumbai.
In Kolkata league, Mohun Bagan's next two matches are on the 20th and 25th against West Bengal Police and Chirag United respectively.
